PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Robert Spike (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Aj Perrett (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Robert Spike!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Aj Perrett!
The judges for this bout are Donald Grub, Paul Tew and Sam Margolis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
No joy there for Spike, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Perrett is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Perrett tries to clinch up.
Spike looks to land a combination but Perrett avoids it well.

Spike has taken the fight to the clinch.

Spike decides to pull guard.
Spike is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Spike is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Perrett defends well.
Perrett postures up in Spike's guard and throws a big left but Spike blocks it.
Spike could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Spike keeping moving, preventing Perrett from controlling successfully.
Spike trying to keep a closed guard but Perrett is proving a slippery customer.
Perrett trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Perrett's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Spike wants to stand and escape but Perrett is having none of it.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Aj Perrett wasn't active enough on the ground.
Perrett looks for a takedown but Spike sprawls well.
Perrett tries to score a power double leg takedown but Spike sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Perrett somewhat.
Perrett shoots in looking for a takedown but Spike manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Perrett's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Robert Spike has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Aj Perrett.

Perrett gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Perrett trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!

Spike is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Perrett has managed to free his arm - good work.

Spike wants to take a breather but Perrett is having none of it.
Perrett trying to control but Spike postures up.
Spike perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Robert Spike has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Perrett misses with a takedown

and Spike counters by moving into the clinch.

Spike is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Perrett defends well.

Perrett trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Spike has his foot on Perrett's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Perrett works his way back into a safe position though.
Spike wants to stand and escape but Perrett is having none of it.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Perrett with a flurry of punches that miss.
Perrett wants to control from the top but Spike keeps moving.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
This has been an exciting period of action!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Spike's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Perrett throws a series of punches but Spike avoids them all with ease.
Spike looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Spike decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Spike is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Perrett works his way to full guard. Good work.
Perrett looking for a sweep. Not yet Perrett, not yet.
Spike might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Perrett controls Spike momentarily but Spike frees himself.

Spike pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Perrett is keeping the position for now.
Spike wants to control from the top but Perrett keeps moving.
Spike stopping the sweep attempt from Perrett.
Spike wants to stand and escape but instead Perrett has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Spike had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Perrett defends it easily.
Spike looking to hit a scissor sweep but Perrett is one step ahead there.
Perrett is looking to stand up but Spike won't let him.

Spike escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Perrett gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Spike controlling the position.

Spike is looking for a triangle but Perrett pushes his legs off easily.
Perrett with a flurry of punches that miss.
Perrett wanted to stand there but Spike had control of the position.
Spike pulls Perrett in close to prevent any damage.
Perrett preventing the sweep.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Perrett looking to sit in guard and control but Spike gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Spike seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Perrett is pulling down on Spike's head. It's preventing any offense from Spike, at least for the moment.
Spike wanted to stand there but Perrett had control of the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Perrett circles away from the clinch attempt.

Spike throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Perrett tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Spike is in Perrett's guard.
Perrett looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Spike is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Spike wants to pass the guard but Perrett is keeping the position.
Perrett is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Spike trying to control the position from guard on top but Perrett is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Robert Spike.

Spike fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Perrett to the ground. Spike is now in Perrett's guard.

Spike is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Perrett controls Spike momentarily but Spike frees himself.
Spike keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Perrett's head.
Perrett is looking to stand back up but Spike counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Perrett.
Spike looks to score some points with some ground and pound.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Spike not doing much here.
Perrett trying to control but Spike postures up.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Spike connects with a nice short shot to Perrett's temple.
Perrett is trying to maintain the position but Spike is very close to passing his half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Spike performing his best blanket impression for a moment.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Spike swings for the body but Perrett moves out of range.
Spike lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Perrett circles away quickly and effectively.
Spike leaves Perrett with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Perrett takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Perrett is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Perrett doesn't manage to clinch there - Spike circles away.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Perrett wants to clinch up but Spike keeps it at a distance.
Spike moves in looking to clinch but Perrett pushes him off.
Spike misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Spike keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
No luck for Spike with that takedown attempt.
Perrett misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Spike avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Spike darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Aj Perrett has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Robert Spike is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Robert Spike overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Spike thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

And that's the end of the fight!
Robert Spike showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Spike has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
