PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rashad Evens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jones has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. Rashad Evens has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Rashad Evens!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jon Jones!
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, Skip Squint and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Evens closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Evens is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Jones is defending well.

Jones breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Evens fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Jones delivers a nice body kick.
Jones swats away the attempt to clinch by Evens.
Jones pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Jones looks winded!
Evens darts in trying to clinch
and Jones counters with a body kick.
Evens moves in looking to clinch but Jones pushes him off.
Jones tries to clinch up but Evens circles away and keeps his distance.
Evens blocks the body kick.
Evens shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Rashad Evens. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Jones keeps the fight on the outside.
Evens throws a sloppy head kick and Jones moves out of range easily.
Evens could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Jones tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Evens counters with a single leg into guard. Jones didn't expect that.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Evens won't allow Jones to sweep him here.
Evens stays in close to Jones's body and controls the position.
Evens wants to pass the guard but Jones is keeping the position.
Evens is looking to work some ground and pound but Jones has wrist control.
Evens connects with a couple of short punches.
Evens slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Evens trying to control the action but Jones is working from the bottom.

Evens decides to stand back up.
Evens fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Evens fails with the takedown.
Evens throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Jones swats away the attempt to clinch by Evens.
Evens misses with a jab, cross combination.

Jones fails to land the takedown.

Evens closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Jones to the mat! Jones manages to get full guard.
Jones is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Evens stays in close to Jones's body and controls the position.
Evens lands a couple of digs.
Jones working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Evens.
Evens wants to stand but Jones has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Jones keeping moving, preventing Evens from controlling successfully.

Jones avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Evens has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Jones is proving hard to escape from.
Evens is stalling in the full guard.
Evens's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Evens tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Jones manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Evens throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Evens misses with a takedown attempt - Jones sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Jones moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Evens shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Jones as he jumps to the side.

Jones tries to close the distance and clinch but Evens swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Evens has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Jones is breathing heavily.
Evens fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Jones avoids it really well and circles away.
Evens throws a nice looking combination but Jones bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Evens rushes Jones and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Jones breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Evens tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Jones counters with a slapping leg kick.

Evens shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Jones napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Jones is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
You can see the frustration on Jones's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Evens wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Jones, who protects the arm well.
Evens wants to control but Jones is keeping him busy.

Jones tries to bench press Evens off him but Evens keeps the position.
Evens is looking to take a break and control but Jones is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Evens decides to stand up, so the ref orders Jones to his feet.
Evens looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Evens changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Jones tries to avoid it but Evens manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Jones to the ground. Jones escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Evens shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Jones as he jumps to the side.
Evens displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Jones.

Jones tries for a takedown but Evens sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Evens has managed to clinch.
Evens is looking to break free of the clinch but Jones has double underhooks.
Jones gets underhooks to prevent Evens's takedown attempt.
Jones wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Jones is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Evens is looking to take this one to the mat.

Jones pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Evens throws a front kick that sends Jones stumbling back into the cage.
Evens tries to clinch up but Jones circles away and keeps his distance.
Evens closes this distance looking for a takedown but Jones circles away.
Evens stuffs the takedown attempt from Jones. Jones gets slowly back to his feet.
Evens shoots for a takedown but Jones saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Evens tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Jones paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Evens closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Jones's guard.
Evens lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Evens stands up over Jones, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Evens got a little sloppy there for a moment and Jones has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Evens has managed to get both his arms back between Jones's legs - danger averted.
Jones is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Jones is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Evens has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Jones is looking for a triangle but Evens pushes his legs off easily.
Jones throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.

Evens decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Evens lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Jones circles away quickly and effectively.

Jones shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Evens as he jumps to the side.

Evens throws a series of punches but Jones avoids them all with ease.
Evens fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Jones looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Jones throws a sloppy head kick and Evens moves out of range easily.
Evens fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Evens shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Jones as he jumps to the side.

Evens will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Jones is defended easily by Evens.
Jones shoots in looking for a takedown but Evens manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Jones's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Evens shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Jones's guard.

Jones has his foot on Evens's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Evens works his way back into a safe position though.
Rashad Evens overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Evens loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Jones is wriggling around but Evens manages to pass to half guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Jones is looking to control Evens's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Jones avoid being mounted?
Jon Jones has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Rashad Evens is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Evens is trying to control. Jones wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
