The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Zangief throws a head kick that misses.
Zangief scores with a kick to the midsection.
Zangief tries a head kick but it misses.
Zangief throws a sloppy head kick and Maia moves out of range easily.
Zangief moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
Zangief throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body.
Maia shoots in for a double leg but Zangief sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Zangief throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
Zangief pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Zangief lands a front kick.
Maia walks forward, straight into a front kick from Zangief.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Zangief tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Maia takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.
Zangief tries a head kick but it misses.
Zangief goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
A solid body kick from Zangief.
Maia takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?
Zangief lands a nice leg kick that just misses Maia's sensitive parts.
Crunch! Zangief slams his shin into Maia's torso.
Maia is breathing heavily.
Maia blocks a head kick by Zangief.

Maia drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
