PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Cain Velasquez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ricky Lee (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Velasquez's entrance music is UFC - Face the Pain. A fine choice. Lee is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by I Am Perfection by Cage 9. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 - 5 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Cain Velasquez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 16 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ricky Lee!
The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Johanna Lukiainen and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lee jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Velasquez uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Lee.
Lee scores with a decent looking hook.
Lee misses with a lunging right hand
and Velasquez counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Lee tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Velasquez was well out of range. Poor timing from Lee.
Lee throws a big shot that misses.
Nice takedown defense from Lee. No joy for Velasquez on that attempt.
Lee throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Velasquez shoots in looking for a takedown but Lee manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Velasquez's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Velasquez uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Lee.
Velasquez dodges the punch combination from Lee.
Velasquez drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Lee misses with a hook. Velasquez ducked under it nicely.

Lee has closed the distance and engaged Velasquez in a clinch.
A short right hand to the side of the head by Lee.
Lee effectively controlling the action here.
Lee tries a body shot but Velasquez blocks it.
Lee is pressed up against the cage. Velasquez has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Lee down to the mat. Lee avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Cain Velasquez. That's going to take a lot out of him.

and Velasquez decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Lee's guard.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Velasquez throws a strike but Lee rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Lee really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Velasquez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Velasquez is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Velasquez has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Lee tries to free his leg and advance position but Velasquez is retaining full guard.

Velasquez might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Velasquez bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Lee's guard.
Lee has control of Velasquez's left arm, preventing Velasquez from doing any damage.
Velasquez prevents Lee from getting back to his feet.

Lee can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Velasquez controls the pace.

Velasquez looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Lee is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Velasquez closes the distance and clinches up with Lee, looking for a takedown. Velasquez pushes Lee against the cage but Lee circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Velasquez displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Lee throws out the jab.
Lee paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.

Lee throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Lee comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Ricky Lee seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Velasquez ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

Velasquez shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Lee but Lee pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Ricky Lee showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Velasquez misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Cain Velasquez.
I think Lee has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
