PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Daniel Gidlow (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Korbett (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Korbett has chosen 2pac - Fight Music as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Daniel Gidlow!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, James Korbett!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Chris Saunders and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gidlow throws a head kick but Korbett moves out of range.

Gidlow shoots in and gets a takedown into Korbett's guard.
Gidlow wants to pass the guard but Korbett is keeping the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Korbett wants to sweep but no luck.

Korbett throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Gidlow won't allow Korbett to sweep him here.
Gidlow stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Korbett swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Gidlow wants to control from the top but Korbett keeps moving.

Korbett is trying to control the position from the bottom.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. James Korbett wasn't active enough on the ground.

Gidlow gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Gidlow wants to stand and escape but Korbett is having none of it.
Gidlow pulls Korbett in close to prevent any damage.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Korbett has a takedown stuffed.

Korbett gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Gidlow to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Gidlow drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Korbett dives on top into guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Gidlow has a closed guard, preventing Korbett from standing up.
Gidlow is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Daniel Gidlow has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Gidlow tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Korbett counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Korbett shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Gidlow manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Gidlow is breathing heavily.
Gidlow working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Korbett.
Korbett postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Korbett gets to his feet - Gidlow follows without any prompting.
This has been an exciting period of action!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Gidlow takes a head kick and keeps coming.


It looks like Daniel Gidlow has been cut.

Korbett shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Horrible takedown by Gidlow or perhaps it was just good defense by Korbett which made him look bad.
Daniel Gidlow seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Korbett drives through with a takedown into Gidlow's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Korbett is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Gidlow is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Gidlow has escaped and now he's on top!

Korbett had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Gidlow defends it easily.

Korbett is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

OK we're going to have a standup here. James Korbett hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Korbett throws a body kick that misses.
Korbett shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Gidlow pinned against the cage. Gidlow gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Korbett is breathing heavily.
Gidlow tries to clinch up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Korbett keeps the fight on the outside.

Gidlow throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Korbett was covering up waiting for the punch and Gidlow finishes the takedown easily into guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Korbett is on top in guard.

Gidlow pushes Korbett off and scrambles back to his feet.
Korbett shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Gidlow as he avoids it easily.
Gidlow changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Korbett tries to avoid it but Gidlow manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Korbett to the ground. Korbett escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Daniel Gidlow has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Korbett.

Korbett throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body.
Gidlow tries to clinch but Korbett moves out of range.

Korbett clinches up with Gidlow and pushes him back against the cage.

Korbett turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Gidlow is trying to get back to half guard.
Korbett is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Gidlow wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

Korbett happy to just control the position for now.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Korbett wants to control but Gidlow is keeping him busy.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The ref stands the fighters back up. James Korbett was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Korbett fails with the takedown.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Korbett showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Daniel Gidlow's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Korbett misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Korbett dives in and grabs Gidlow's left leg, looking for a takedown. Gidlow pushes down on Korbett's head and hops out.
Crunch! Korbett slams his shin into Gidlow's torso.
Daniel Gidlow is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Gidlow closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Korbett did well to prevent Gidlow getting side control.
Korbett is refusing to be controlled, as Gidlow sits in half guard.

Gidlow looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Korbett is not content to let Gidlow control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Gidlow not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Korbett wants to improve his position but Gidlow is controlling well.
Gidlow tries to pass to full mount but Korbett defends it.
Gidlow seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
James Korbett has got the better of the ground game so far.
Gidlow prevents Korbett from improving his position.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Korbett is staying active underneath Gidlow, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Korbett shoots in looking for a takedown. Gidlow tries to sprawl out of it but Korbett keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Gidlow manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Gidlow takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Korbett scores with a jab to the body.
Korbett has a takedown stuffed.
Daniel Gidlow has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Korbett.
Korbett throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Gidlow.

Korbett moves into the clinch successfully.
Gidlow jumps guard but Korbett turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
A bit of stalling here from Korbett.

Korbett manages to break the clinch.
Korbett shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Gidlow misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Korbett swats away the attempt to clinch by Gidlow.
Korbett shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Gidlow as he jumps to the side.
Gidlow shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Korbett defends it nicely.
Gidlow fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
A decent looking body kick lands there for Korbett.

I would just about give that final round to James Korbett.
Well Korbett has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
