The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Stefan is defended easily by Smith.

Smith drops back, looking for a kneebar! Stefan looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Stefan looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Stefan!

Stefan is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Smith is just riding it out for now. Stefan eventually gives up the hold.

Stefan shoots in for a double leg but Smith sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Stefan has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
