Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Pete Ruent (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Phal Um (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). There are an array of beautiful celebrities at ringside tonight! I wonder if any of them paid for their tickets.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Pete Ruent!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 33 - 19 - 0, fighting out of New York, Phal Um!
The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Franklyn Lucas and David Schapiro.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ruent moves out of range of the strikes.
Ruent scores with a shot to the body.
Um doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Ruent counters with a nice low kick that buckles Um's knee momentarily.
Um shoots in for a takedown but Ruent shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Um moves out of range of the body kick from Ruent.
Um has a takedown stuffed.
Pete Ruent has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Phal Um.

Um fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Ruent sprawls well initially but Um persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Ruent is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Um pulls his head out easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Um slips a nice elbow through Ruent's hands, connecting with Ruent's forehead.

Ruent has his foot on Um's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Um works his way back into a safe position though.

Ruent has Um pulled in close to control his posture.
Um wants to control from the top but Ruent keeps moving.
Um throws a strike but Ruent rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Um seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Ruent has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Um is working away from the top position though.

Um got a little sloppy there for a moment and Ruent has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Um has managed to get both his arms back between Ruent's legs - danger averted.
Um must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Phal Um showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Ruent clobbers Um with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Phal Um seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Um scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
Um closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Ruent lands a jab to the head.
Um tries to clinch there but Ruent circles away.
Horrible takedown by Um or perhaps it was just good defense by Ruent which made him look bad.
Um shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Ruent as he avoids it easily.

Um misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Ruent.

and Um takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Um thows a body shot but no joy.
Ruent fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Um throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Um takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Ruent pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Um shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Ruent as he avoids it easily.
Pete Ruent has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Phal Um.

Um swings and misses with a hook to the body.

Phal Um is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Um is defended easily by Ruent.
Um tries to score a power double leg takedown but Ruent sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Um somewhat.
Um takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Ruent will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

and Ruent counters with a one-two to the body.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Um shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
enabling Ruent to counter with a crisp jab.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Ruent.
Pete Ruent has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Ruent defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Um.
Um shoots in and drives through. Ruent sprawls well.
Um with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Ruent to score with a decent uppercut.

Um tries to bum rush Ruent with a series of wild strikes but Ruent uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Um on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.

Ruent throws a 1-2 combo that connects squarely on Um's jaw, knocking him onto his back! Ruent dives in looking to finish as Um flails his arms in a desperate attempt to block Ruent's strikes! Ruent is raining down hammerfists and the ref stops it! Um's desperate flailing just didn't constitute intelligent defence. Some people will probably question the ref's decision but Um was definitely hurt and the ref saved him from taking unnecessary punishment. A fighter's safety is paramount in this sport.
