PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Gaius Marius (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jason Etrigan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gaius Marius !
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jason Etrigan!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Franklyn Lucas and Jorge Garcia.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Marius .
Marius changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Etrigan tries to avoid it but Marius manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Etrigan to the ground. Etrigan escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Marius lands with a nice combination. Etrigan backs away looking to recover.
Marius closes the distance and clinches up with Etrigan, looking for a takedown. Marius pushes Etrigan against the cage but Etrigan circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gaius Marius . That's going to take a lot out of him.
A telegraphed right hand from Etrigan misses the target.
Etrigan walks into a stiff left hand from Marius .

Etrigan is rocked!
Etrigan tries for a takedown but Marius circles away easily

and Marius counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Etrigan is still in real trouble! Can Marius finish him?
Marius stops Etrigan from standing up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Etrigan seems to have recovered his senses.
Marius stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Etrigan swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Etrigan preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Etrigan wants to stand and escape but Marius is having none of it.

Etrigan wants to stand up but Marius is controlling him.
Etrigan looks gassed!

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Nice uppercut there from Marius .
Etrigan tries to clinch but Marius is having none of it.
Marius slips under a jab from Etrigan.
Etrigan gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Marius misses with a few strikes there.
Marius throws a jab when Etrigan was well out of range.
Marius lands with a kick to the temple. Etrigan shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
Marius punishes Etrigan's body with a nice straight punch.
Marius lands a left and a right that sends Etrigan crashing to the canvas! Marius dives into mount looking to finish!

Marius fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!

Marius is landing with some decent strikes but Etrigan is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Etrigan can do anything to dispel that myth.

The referee warns Etrigan that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
BOOM! Marius connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Marius postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Etrigan looks a forlorn figure.

Etrigan is bucking up trying to escape but Marius cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

Etrigan is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
Marius fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Etrigan tries to buck Marius off but he can't manage it.

Etrigan takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gaius Marius dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Marius feints and as Etrigan raises his hands in defense, Marius changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Marius advances to half guard.
Etrigan pushes Marius off looking to stand but Marius dives back in and keeps control.

Marius looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Etrigan with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Check out the look on Marius 's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!

Etrigan really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Marius . If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Marius is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Etrigan can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

Marius working from mount. He moves in close and looks like he might be going for an arm triangle... He's hopped off to the side and he's transitioned into an Anaconda choke. Etrigan turning a nasty shade of purple. He's refusing to tap but he's gone! He's out! The ref rips Marius off and cradles Etrigan's limp body as Marius celebrates with his corner.
