PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jim McSlim (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dan Larson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Larson has chosen Sweet Child of Mine as his entrance music. Dan Larson is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jim McSlim!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 15 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Dan Larson!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Fedor Mirinova and Viktor Lagutenko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McSlim tries for a takedown but Larson circles away easily

and Larson counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Larson trying to control the position from guard on top but McSlim is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
McSlim looking to control.
McSlim keeping full guard, as Larson tries to pass.
McSlim is pulling down on Larson's head. It's preventing any offense from Larson, at least for the moment.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Jim McSlim wasn't doing enough on the ground.
McSlim misses with a takedown attempt
and Larson counters with a body kick.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Larson stuffs the takedown attempt from McSlim. McSlim gets slowly back to his feet.

Larson makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Larson is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. McSlim doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Larson.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Larson is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, McSlim has managed to free his arm - good work.

McSlim is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Larson pulls his head out easily.

Larson content to control rather than advance.
McSlim trying to control here but he's found himself mounted! Oh no!

Larson stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.
This has been an exciting period of action!
McSlim throws a series of punches but Larson avoids them all with ease.

McSlim scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

McSlim looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Larson has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. McSlim is working away from the top position though.

Larson is controlling McSlim's position as best he can from this difficult position.
McSlim throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
McSlim wants to advance to full mount but Larson doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.
Larson is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Larson is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Larson avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Larson dips to his left and cracks McSlim with an uppercut!
This has been an exciting period of action!
McSlim fails with the takedown
and Larson counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


McSlim tries for a takedown but Larson circles away easily
and Larson counters with a nice uppercut.
Larson misses with a straight right.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from McSlim is defended easily by Larson.
Larson avoids a punch combination nicely.
McSlim takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
McSlim shoots in and drives through. Larson sprawls well.

Larson closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

McSlim is looking to regain half guard here but Larson keeps moving and retains side control.

McSlim seems a little lost for a moment, as Larson dominates the positioning.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

McSlim throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

McSlim unloads with some shots from mount but Larson bucks and avoids them well.
Larson is looking to improve his position but McSlim isn't that keen on the idea.
McSlim trying to control but he's not successful this time.
McSlim sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

McSlim swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Larson is now in McSlim's guard. A big mistake from McSlim there, giving up the dominant position!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Dan Larson will probably get the nod - 10:9.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

and Larson counters with a stiff right hand.

and Larson counters with a single leg into guard. McSlim didn't expect that.

McSlim not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Larson is looking to work some ground and pound but McSlim has wrist control.
Larson slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Larson is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but McSlim is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

McSlim has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Larson is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but McSlim is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

McSlim keeping moving, preventing Larson from controlling successfully.
Dan Larson has got the better of the ground game so far.
Larson might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control McSlim haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Larson avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Larson passes McSlim's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Larson thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

McSlim with the active half guard here but Larson passes nicely into side control.
Larson tries to advance to mount but McSlim denies him.
Larson throwing strikes but McSlim manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!
McSlim wants to lay and pray for a moment but Larson keeps working.
McSlim will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
McSlim tries to move into full mount but can't pass Larson's legs.
Larson tries to improve position but can't.
Larson regains half guard.
McSlim wants to free his trapped foot but Larson is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Larson is controlling McSlim's trapped leg to prevent McSlim from advancing to side control.
Jim McSlim has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

McSlim is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Larson doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time McSlim.
Larson makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Larson.
Dan Larson is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
McSlim in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
McSlim postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Larson pulls McSlim in close to prevent any damage.

And that's the end of the fight!
Dan Larson comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Larson has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
