PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jim Pounder (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Juancho Rivera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pounder's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, People in Planes-Last Man Standing. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 31 - 19 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jim Pounder!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 16 - 0, fighting out of New York, Juancho Rivera!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Timothy Bukovac and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A slow jab from Rivera misses its intended target.
Rivera misses with a straight right.
Pounder fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Rivera fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Pounder manages to avoid it.
Rivera swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Rivera looks to land a left hand but Pounder moved out of range nicely.

Pounder clinches up with Rivera and pushes him back against the cage.
Pounder drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Rivera gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Pounder goes for a takedown attempt but Rivera pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jim Pounder. That's going to take a lot out of him.
That kick from Rivera tenderised Pounder's leg. Pounder is trying to keep his angry face on.
A lazy left from Rivera finds it's target.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rivera throws a solid leg kick but Pounder takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Rivera.
Rivera thows a body shot but no joy.
Rivera just misses with a punch to the body.
Nice cross by Rivera.
Rivera misses with a low kick.
Rivera thuds his right hand into Pounder's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

and Pounder counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Rivera's guard now.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Rivera looking to hit a scissor sweep but Pounder is one step ahead there.
Rivera working a defensive guard but Pounder manages to pass into side control anyway.

Pounder tries to advance to mount but can't.
Pounder moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Rivera tries to improve position but can't.

Rivera tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rivera is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Rivera tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Rivera tries to hold on but Pounder pushes him away.
Rivera is trying to escape the mount.
Pounder controlling the pace for now.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Rivera is trying desperately to improve position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Juancho Rivera dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

so Pounder counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Rivera controls Pounder momentarily but Pounder frees himself.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Juancho Rivera hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
A combination from Rivera does no damage.

Rivera showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Pounder.
A looping hook to the body misses from Rivera. Pounder does a little dance to reset his feet.
Rivera goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Rivera is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Pounder.

Rivera scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Rivera connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.

and Pounder counters with a single leg into guard. Rivera didn't expect that.
Rivera wants to stand but Pounder is controlling the position.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Rivera ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Pounder moves away.

Rivera throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Rivera lands with a nice body kick.
Pounder shoots in for a double leg but Rivera sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Rivera tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Pounder was well out of range. Poor timing from Rivera.

Pounder's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

and Pounder counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Rivera!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Pounder is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Jim Pounder overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Rivera is looking for a sweep.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Jim Pounder will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Rivera jabs Pounder to the body, keeping him at a distance.

Horrible takedown by Pounder or perhaps it was just good defense by Rivera which made him look bad.

Pounder takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.

and Pounder counters with a takedown into side control.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Pounder remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Pounder has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Jim Pounder just wasn't active enough.
Rivera throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.
Pounder uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Rivera.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Rivera swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Rivera throws the left hand but Pounder avoids the punch easily.

Pounder shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Rivera napping and manages to drive through into side control!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Pounder is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Rivera will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jim Pounder.
I think Pounder has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
