PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Al Shaffer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Amis Pelle (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Shaffer kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Midnight At The Oasis by Maria Muldaur. Al Shaffer has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Al Shaffer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Amis Pelle!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Roosa Järviläinen and Ben Zyskovitsi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shaffer moves forwards but Pelle connects with a nice, crisp jab.


It looks like Al Shaffer has been cut.
Pelle will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Shaffer avoids the body shot from Pelle.
Pelle throws a poor cross that misses
and Shaffer cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Some wild striking there from Pelle.
Shaffer fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Pelle avoids it really well and circles away.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Pelle has Shaffer pressed against the cage, preventing Shaffer from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Shaffer wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Pelle catches Shaffer with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Shaffer is working Pelle over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Shaffer accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Pelle not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Shaffer.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Al Shaffer. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Pelle throws the left hand but Shaffer avoids the punch easily.

Pelle is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
Shaffer passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Pelle!
Pelle wants to control but Shaffer is having none of it.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Pelle cracks Shaffer with a right hand to the side of the head.
Shaffer closes this distance looking for a takedown but Pelle circles away.
Pelle lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Shaffer circles away quickly and effectively.
Some wild striking there from Pelle.
Shaffer fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Shaffer shoots in and drives through. Pelle sprawls well.

Al Shaffer overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Shaffer would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Shaffer sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Pelle's guard.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Pelle can do anything to dispel that myth.

Shaffer works his foot free and advances to mount.
Shaffer cracks Pelle with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Shaffer is landing with some decent strikes but Pelle is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Shaffer misses with some ground and pound and Pelle recovers position to half guard.

Shaffer is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Pelle doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Shaffer.

Shaffer stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Pelle swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's time! Shaffer's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Pelle misses with a double jab
and Shaffer counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Pelle thinking.
Shaffer slips a jab and a cross from Pelle.

Pelle stuffs the takedown attempt from Shaffer. Shaffer gets slowly back to his feet.
Pelle misses with a few strikes there.
Shaffer scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Amis Pelle seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Shaffer tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Pelle paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Shaffer is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Pelle can do to turn this around?

Shaffer blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Pelle swings wildly with an uppercut but Shaffer uses good head movement to avoid it.
Pelle throws a punch but it's blocked by Shaffer.

Pelle doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Shaffer digs a right hand into Pelle's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Pelle's gas tank.

Shaffer feints and as Pelle raises his hands in defense, Shaffer changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Al Shaffer is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

We're going to have a standup here because Al Shaffer wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Shaffer throws a body punch but Pelle moves out of range.

Pelle tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Shaffer stands up and beckons Pelle to join him on the feet.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Pelle misses with a body shot.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Shaffer closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Amis Pelle has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Pelle rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Shaffer moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

And that's the end of the fight!
Al Shaffer showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Shaffer, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
