PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Kendrell Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kent Wire (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Johnson comes to the cage accompanied by 2-Pac (Hit Em Up). Wire has chosen Bust Back as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. The fight MMA fans around the world have waited their entire lives for!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kendrell Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kent Wire!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Eliza Hachem and Donatello Bradman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnson blocks a head kick by Wire.
Wire misses with a two punch combination.

Johnson darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Johnson takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Wire is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Johnson tries to pass the half guard into mount. Wire knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Johnson wants to pass the guard but Wire is defending well.
Wire is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Ground and pound from Johnson.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Johnson connects with a nice short shot to Wire's temple.
Johnson lands strikes from half guard.
Johnson is nestled in close to Wire, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Johnson prevents Wire from standing back up.
Wire makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Wire.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Johnson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Wire swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Johnson won't allow Wire to sweep him here.

Wire bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Johnson's guard.
Johnson wants to sweep but no luck.

Wire is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Johnson tries to strike from the bottom.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Johnson wants to sweep but no luck.
Wire stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Johnson swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Wire tries to bum rush Johnson with a series of wild strikes but Johnson uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Both fighters circling a little - Wire finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.
Wire is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Wire fails with the takedown

and Johnson counters by moving into the clinch.
Wire looks gassed!
Wire has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Johnson is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Johnson tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Johnson fails to pull guard.
Wire prevents the takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kendrell Johnson. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Johnson changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Wire fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Wire is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Johnson connects with a couple of short punches.
Johnson is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Johnson might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Johnson thows a big elbow that misses.

Wire is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Johnson passes into half guard.

Wire throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Johnson looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Wire with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Wire avoids the head kick by Johnson.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Johnson closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Johnson lands in his opponent's guard.
Wire looking for a sweep. Not yet Wire, not yet.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Johnson connects with a couple of short punches.

Johnson drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Johnson jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Johnson has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Wire to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Johnson is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Wire pulls down on the head and he's put Johnson to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:50 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Kent Wire!
