Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Stu Mercer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shane Ripgut (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the super heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Stu Mercer!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Shane Ripgut!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, George Francis and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mercer misses with a head kick.
Mercer keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.

Mercer darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Ripgut trying to control but Mercer postures up.
Ripgut keeping hold of Mercer's head, controlling as best he can.
Ripgut is looking to control Mercer's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Ripgut avoid being mounted?
Ripgut tries to roll over but Mercer keeps him under control.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Shane Ripgut hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Mercer scores with a crisp jab that stopped Ripgut in his tracks.
Ripgut slips a jab and a cross from Mercer.

Mercer lands with a nice body punch.
A head kick misses from Ripgut.
Mercer blocks a head kick by Ripgut.
Mercer throws a body punch but Ripgut moves out of range.
Ripgut throws a right hand that misses

and Mercer counters with a single leg into guard. Ripgut didn't expect that.

Ripgut had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Mercer defends it easily.
Mercer trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Mercer throws a big right hand that misses.
Ripgut controls Mercer momentarily but Mercer frees himself.

Mercer pushing down on Ripgut's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Ripgut is trying to control but can't.

Mercer is looking for a kimura but Ripgut is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Mercer to get the leverage.
Mercer has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Mercer is keen to just control but Ripgut is a slippery customer.
Ripgut tries to roll over but Mercer keeps him under control.
Ripgut really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Mercer. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Mercer not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Ripgut wants to improve his position but Mercer is controlling well.

Mercer perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Mercer tries to pass the half guard into mount. Ripgut knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Ripgut regains full guard. Nicely done.
Ripgut wants to sweep here but Mercer controlling him for the moment.
Mercer is looking to work some ground and pound but Ripgut has wrist control.

Ripgut is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Ripgut can do anything to dispel that myth.
Mercer scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Mercer pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Ripgut is keeping the position for now.
Mercer controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Ripgut not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Shane Ripgut wasn't active enough on the ground.
Mercer misses with a combination
and Ripgut counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Mercer is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Mercer works Ripgut's body with a nice hook.
Mercer stuns Ripgut with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Mercer takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Shane Ripgut seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Mercer thows a body shot but no joy.
A combination from Mercer does no damage.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Ripgut misses with a low kick.
Mercer avoids the head kick by Ripgut.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Stu Mercer dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Ripgut tries to clinch but Mercer moves away

and Mercer counters with a takedown into side control.
Ripgut tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Mercer is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Ripgut is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Ripgut avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Mercer.
Ripgut tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Mercer presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
Mercer is landing with some decent strikes but Ripgut is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Mercer has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Ripgut's face.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Mercer cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Ripgut is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Mercer fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!

That's one minute gone in the round.
Ripgut can't escape the position.
Mercer lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Mercer looking to control and managing it successfully.
Mercer cracks Ripgut with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Mercer postures up and lands a whopping elbow - oh that's hurt Ripgut bigstyle! Two more strikes land for Mercer and the fight is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:41 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Stu Mercer!

Stu Mercer was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
