PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Frank Mir (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kimbo Slice (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Frank Mir!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kimbo Slice!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Robert Twigg and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mir swats away the attempt to clinch by Slice.
Mir throws a sloppy head kick and Slice moves out of range easily.

Mir changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Slice looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Slice tries to bench press Mir off him but Mir keeps the position.
Slice is trying to escape the position but Mir is controlling the position.
Slice gets back to half guard.

Mir stands up out of the half guard.
Mir lands a jab-cross combination.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Slice avoids the head kick by Mir.

Mir showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Slice.
Slice throws a right and a left that both miss.
Mir lands with a kick to the temple. Slice shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
Kimbo Slice seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Slice fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Slice throws a right and a left that both miss.
Slice wants to clinch up but Mir keeps it at a distance.

Mir knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Slice on the ground.

Slice takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Mir will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Slice throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Mir cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Slice misses with a hook.
Slice misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Mir throws a series of punches but Slice moves out of range.
Slice tries to clinch up but Mir circles away and keeps his distance.
Slice blocks a head kick by Mir.

and Slice moves into the clinch.

Slice breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Slice drops Mir with a left and a right! Oh, Mir is hurt - Slice dives into side control looking to finish!


It looks like Frank Mir has been cut.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Slice landing strikes.
Mir is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Slice asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Slice trying to control the position but Mir is working away.

Slice stands up.
Slice throws a combination. Mir tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Mir keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Slice.
Mir throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Mir lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Slice circles away quickly and effectively.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Frank Mir will probably get the nod.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Slice takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Mir pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Slice thows a left - swing and a miss!

and Mir counters with a head kick that drops Slice to the mat! Slice scrambles across the canvas and gets back to his feet, still wobbly!
Frank Mir has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kimbo Slice.

Mir throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Frank Mir is winning the standup battle so far.

Slice forces Mir back against the cage and clinches.
Slice doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Mir wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Mir is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Slice to keep the fight standing.

Slice escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Slice takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
Mir tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Slice manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Mir throws a right and a left that Slice avoids nicely.
Slice takes one on the chin but keeps coming.

Slice moves in looking to clinch but Mir pushes him off.
Mir throws a sloppy head kick and Slice moves out of range easily.
Mir throws a series of punches but Slice avoids them all with ease.
Mir misses with a few strikes there.
Mir lands with an overhand left.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Slice doesn't manage to clinch there - Mir circles away.

Slice throws a combination that misses
and Mir counters with a stiff right hand.
Slice shoots and misses
and Mir counters with a nice uppercut.
Mir looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Slice tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Mir paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Mir got a little sloppy there for a moment and Slice has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Mir has managed to get both his arms back between Slice's legs - danger averted.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Slice takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Mir avoids a punch combination nicely.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Mir checks a leg kick.

Mir scores with a head kick. Slice tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.

Slice rushes Mir and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Mir tries to break the clinch but Slice is controlling the position.
Mir tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Mir has had enough of the clinch but Slice keeps him there for the moment.

Slice utilising his Muay Thai to score with a knee to the body.
Slice tries to stall but Mir uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Slice is trying to pull guard but Mir turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Mir circles away from the clinch attempt.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Slice is defended easily by Mir.

Slice tries to close the distance and clinch but Mir swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Frank Mir is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Mir avoids the body shot from Slice.
Frank Mir is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Slice tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Mir paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Slice wants to clinch up but Mir keeps it at a distance.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Frank Mir.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Mir, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
