PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Todd Covington (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Casy Carver (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Carver is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Bon Jovi - It's my life. Casy Carver is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Todd Covington!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Casy Carver!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Daniel Franklin and Tiny Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Covington looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Carver pulls Covington in to control the position.
Covington trying to control the position from guard on top but Carver is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Covington has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Carver manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.

Covington jumps into guard, dragging Carver to the mat.
Carver controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Carver is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Covington utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Carver is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Carver is stalling in the full guard.

Carver drops back looking for a leg! Covington is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Covington manages to kick Carver off! Carver jumps back into Covington's guard.

Carver sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Covington is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Carver has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Carver is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Covington has escaped the position, nice work there.

Carver throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Carver throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Covington because Carver loaded up on that one.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Carver has hold of Covington's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Covington manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Carver looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Casy Carver dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Carver tries for a takedown but Covington sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Covington stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Covington wants it to stay on the feet.
Covington tries a head kick but it misses.
Carver has a takedown stuffed.
Todd Covington has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Casy Carver.

Covington gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Covington has hold of one of Carver's legs. Carver is fighting the takedown attempt but Covington gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Covington throws a strike but Carver rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Carver thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Carver is pushing down on Covington's leg trying to pass to half guard. Covington is fighting to maintain full guard but Carver has managed to sneak the leg through.

Covington knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Carver on the ground.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Carver looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

Carver is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Covington to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Covington shrugs it off.

Carver is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Covington is surviving well by controlling Carver's body position as best he can.
Carver throws some wild stikes that Covington manages to avoid easily.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Covington tries to lock up and control but Carver gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Carver has control of Covington's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Covington regains control of the situation pretty easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Casy Carver showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Covington throws a push kick but Carver slaps the foot to one side.

Covington changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Carver looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Carver is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Covington off and has taken his back!

You can see the frustration on Covington's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

Casy Carver has got the better of the ground game so far.

Carver has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Covington has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Carver has good solid back control here.

Carver is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Covington is defending well though. Carver let's go of the attempt for now.

I really don't envy Covington right now.

Casy Carver is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Carver just keeping the dominant position. He can't wait too long though, otherwise the referee will stand them back up.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Covington looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.

Casy Carver comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Carver winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
