PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between George Martin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nickolas Bryant (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, George Martin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Nickolas Bryant!
The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, John Mangel and Donatello Bradman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fight stays on the outside here - Bryant looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Bryant gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Nickolas Bryant seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Bryant feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Bryant tries to stand but Martin is controlling from the bottom.
Martin manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Martin working for a guillotine from mount but Bryant is in no mood to give up.
Bryant wants to hold on but Martin pushes him away.
Martin can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Bryant is looking to escape.

Martin lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

Bryant is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Bryant is looking to improve his position but Martin isn't that keen on the idea.

Martin looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Martin has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Bryant is looking to get to half guard.

Martin looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Martin is landing with some decent strikes but Bryant is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Bryant is desperately trying to improve his position but Martin has a good base and remains in mount.

Martin landing strikes from the mount and Bryant is in trouble!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Martin has control of Bryant's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Bryant regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Martin is breathing heavily.

Martin breaks from Bryant's wrist control and lands an elbow.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Martin has hold of Bryant's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Bryant manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Bryant is desperately trying to improve his position but Martin has a good base and remains in mount.
Martin will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Martin landing punches.
Bryant tries to reverse the position but Martin maintains control.
Martin fails to move to back control.
Bryant wants to control but Martin is having none of it.
Bryant is working to get back to half guard.

Bryant is trying to escape the mount.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Martin landing strikes from the mount.
Martin is landing with some decent strikes but Bryant is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Bryant is bucking up trying to escape but Martin cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

Martin looking for a guillotine from mount but Bryant is having none of it.
Bryant is looking to improve his position but Martin isn't that keen on the idea.
Bryant regains half guard.
Martin tries to pass to full mount but Bryant defends it.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Bryant can do anything to dispel that myth.
Bryant flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Bryant wants to improve his position but Martin is controlling well.
Martin is looking to take a break and control but Bryant is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Martin thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Bryant's head.

Bryant throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Martin connects with a nice short shot to Bryant's temple.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Martin swats away the attempt to clinch by Bryant.
Bryant connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Martin keeps the fight on the outside.
Bryant misses with a straight left.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
The fighters circling - Martin throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Bryant throws a series of punches but Martin moves out of range.
Bryant takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

George Martin dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Martin slips a jab from Bryant.
Bryant missing with a left hand there. Martin was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Bryant keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Martin.
Bryant shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Martin as he avoids it easily.

and Bryant connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Martin moves out of range of the strikes.
Bryant is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Martin.
Bryant misses with a series of wild punches.
Martin throws a hook to the side of Bryant's head but Bryant sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Martin moves out of range of the strikes.
Bryant wants to clinch up but Martin keeps it at a distance.

Martin shoots in and bounces Bryant off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Martin won't allow Bryant to sweep him here.
Bryant is breathing heavily.
Bryant doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Bryant wants to stand and escape but Martin is having none of it.
Bryant preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Bryant looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Martin wants to control from the top but Bryant keeps moving.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Martin throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Bryant's waist but Bryant gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Martin off to one side.
Bryant blocks a jab.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Bryant is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Bryant closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Bryant misses with a takedown attempt - Martin sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Martin slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.

Martin pushes Bryant up against the cage in a clinch.
Bryant goes for a takedown in the clinch but Martin prevents it.
George Martin has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nickolas Bryant.
Martin wants a takedown but no success here.
Bryant misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Martin lands a shoulder strike.

Bryant blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Martin scores with a shot to the side of Bryant's head.
The referee calls for Martin to work.
Martin swings wildly with an uppercut but Bryant uses good head movement to avoid it.
Martin lands with a left to the head.

Martin swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Martin misses with the head strike.
Martin misses with a punch on the inside.

Martin pulls Bryant into guard.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Martin trying to keep a closed guard but Bryant is proving a slippery customer.

Martin has his foot on Bryant's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Bryant works his way back into a safe position though.
Bryant is in close to Martin's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Bryant stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Martin swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Bryant avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Martin trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Bryant passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Bryant passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Martin!
Bryant lands a big elbow.
Martin is wriggling around trying to escape.
Bryant with the ground and pound from mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

George Martin dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Bryant tries to clinch but Martin moves away
and Martin makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Martin displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Bryant throws out the jab.

Martin gets caught flat footed, as Bryant shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Bryant is in close to Martin's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Bryant won't allow Martin to sweep him here.
Bryant with a flurry of punches that miss.
Bryant loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Martin is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Bryant landing with the ground and pound.

Martin escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Bryant gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Bryant trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Bryant trying to control the position from guard on top but Martin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Bryant stopping the sweep attempt from Martin.

Martin is looking to sinch up a triangle. Bryant throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Martin's body to avoid the submission. Martin has instead reached around Bryant's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Martin arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:24 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). George Martin!
