PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Suchart Chaowanungkarn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jacob Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chaowanungkarn comes to the cage accompanied by Muay Thai fight music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 24 - 21 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Suchart Chaowanungkarn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 22 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jacob Smith!
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, Skip Squint and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Chaowanungkarn's waist but Chaowanungkarn gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Smith off to one side.
Chaowanungkarn pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Chaowanungkarn throws a head kick that Smith semi-blocks.

Smith gets a clinch.
Chaowanungkarn tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Smith tries a knee to the head but Chaowanungkarn blocks it.
Smith wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Smith trying to control the position but instead, Chaowanungkarn has worked for underhooks and has pushed Smith into the cage.
Chaowanungkarn landing knees to the head.
Chaowanungkarn lands a right hand that snaps the head of Smith backwards.
Smith takes an elbow to the temple.


It looks like Jacob Smith has been cut.
Chaowanungkarn with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Chaowanungkarn throws a head punch that misses.
Chaowanungkarn misses with an elbow over the top.
Smith creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Smith dodges an elbow strike from Chaowanungkarn.

Smith is trying to trip Chaowanungkarn. He has hold of a leg but Chaowanungkarn is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Smith persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Smith is fighting to break Chaowanungkarn's control of his arms but Chaowanungkarn is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Smith throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Chaowanungkarn looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Smith in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Smith postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Chaowanungkarn is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Smith, into his guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Smith is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Chaowanungkarn defends well.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Chaowanungkarn controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Smith has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Smith escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Chaowanungkarn gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Smith working for a triangle but Chaowanungkarn defends it easily.
Chaowanungkarn seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Chaowanungkarn controls from within his opponent's guard.
Chaowanungkarn's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Smith looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Smith has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Chaowanungkarn is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Smith.
Smith tries to bench press Chaowanungkarn off him but Chaowanungkarn keeps the position.
Chaowanungkarn has knee on belly and moves into mount.

Smith sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Smith is trying to control but Chaowanungkarn manages to pass to mount!

Smith tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Smith swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Smith regains half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Jacob Smith will probably get the nod.

That's time! Chaowanungkarn's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Smith ducks under a wild hook from Chaowanungkarn.
Smith shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Chaowanungkarn as he jumps to the side.
Chaowanungkarn scores with a jab.

Chaowanungkarn clinches up against the cage.
Chaowanungkarn stops a takedown attempt from Smith.
Smith takes an elbow to the temple.
Chaowanungkarn with the Thai clinch, lands a knee to the head.


Smith is rocked!
Chaowanungkarn tries to land a knee to the head but Smith blocks with his arms.
Smith is still on wobbly legs! Can Chaowanungkarn finish him?

With the two fighters working up against the cage, Chaowanungkarn just misses with a elbow thrown towards Smith's brow.
Chaowanungkarn pushes off an throws an elbow but Smith leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Chaowanungkarn pushes Smith against the cage. Chaowanungkarn is working some dirty boxing. Chaowanungkarn pushes off with a quick right hook! Smith goes down! Smith tries to stand but stumbles back to his kness! Chaowanungkarn moves in to finish and the ref steps in to prevent any more damage!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:51 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Suchart Chaowanungkarn!
