PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Will Rook (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and George Kennedy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rook comes to the cage accompanied by Shinedown-Simple Man. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Will Rook!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, George Kennedy!
The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Edson Gomes and Daniel Cesar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rook has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Kennedy.
Kennedy tries for a takedown but Rook sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Kennedy drives through with a takedown into Rook's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Kennedy looking to sit in guard and control but Rook gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Rook looking to pass the guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rook trying to control but Kennedy is working from the bottom.
Rook not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Will Rook just wasn't active enough.
Horrible takedown by Kennedy or perhaps it was just good defense by Rook which made him look bad.
Kennedy throws a nice looking combination but Rook bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Rook will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Kennedy shoots in for a takedown but Rook shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Will Rook has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of George Kennedy.
Rook throws a leg kick but Kennedy sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Will Rook seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Rook feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Kennedy's calf.
Rook looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Kennedy is fending him off so far but Rook persists. Nope, Kennedy circles away and we're back to standing.

Rook stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Rook wants it to stay on the feet.

It looks like George Kennedy has been cut.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Kennedy shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Rook defends it nicely.
Rook tries to score with a low kick but Kennedy moves his leg out of the way.

Rook takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Kennedy throws a leg kick but Rook sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Rook is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Kennedy.
Kennedy throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.
Rook swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Kennedy closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Kennedy is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Kennedy is keen to just control but Rook is a slippery customer.

Rook is looking to improve his position.

Rook is defending against the submission attempts here by Kennedy.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rook moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Kennedy looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Rook looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Kennedy has gone for a leg lock! Rook slips out almost immediately though and dives into Kennedy's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Will Rook will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on George Kennedy's cut.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Kennedy tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Rook throws a head kick that misses
and Kennedy counters with a right hand to the body.
Rook swings away with a body shot that misses
and Kennedy counters with an inside leg kick.
Kennedy jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Kennedy shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Rook pinned against the cage. Rook gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
A looping hook to the body misses from Rook. Kennedy does a little dance to reset his feet.
Kennedy wants to land a leg kick but Rook is out of range.
Rook cracks Kennedy with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
A punch combination from Rook misses.
Kennedy misses with a straight right.
Kennedy throws a hook to the side of Rook's head but Rook sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Rook moves forwards but Kennedy connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Kennedy moves out of range of the body kick.

Rook misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Kennedy.
A good leg kick by Kennedy.
Kennedy throws a lazy head kick

and Rook counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Will Rook overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Kennedy keeping moving, preventing Rook from controlling successfully.
Rook works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Rook is pressing down on Kennedy's thigh, looking to free his foot. Kennedy is holding on for now.

Rook is working for a submission of some sort.

Rook sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Kennedy's guard.
Rook wants to pass to mount but Kennedy is defending the position.

Rook is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Kennedy has hold of Rook's hands but Rook slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Kennedy works his way to full guard. Good work.
Kennedy has momentary wrist control but Rook slips an elbow through the middle.
Rook pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Kennedy is keeping the position for now.
Kennedy controls Rook momentarily but Rook frees himself.
Rook is looking to work some ground and pound but Kennedy has wrist control.

Kennedy is looking for a triangle but Rook pushes his legs off easily.
Rook tries to free his leg and advance position but Kennedy is retaining full guard.
Kennedy is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Kennedy working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Rook doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Rook manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Kennedy is controlling Rook's posture.
Rook passes Kennedy's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Rook throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Rook works his foot free and advances to mount.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Rook is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Kennedy has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Kennedy!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rook not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Kennedy takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.
Rook tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Kennedy was well out of range. Poor timing from Rook.
Kennedy tries to land a front kick but Rook steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Rook looks to land a combination. Kennedy sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Kennedy shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
A head kick from Kennedy lands but Rook takes it in his stride.

Rook lands a big head kick that sends Kennedy tumbling to the mat! Rook takes a step backwards and waves Kennedy back to his feet - he wants the finish!


Kennedy is rocked!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Crunch! Rook slams his shin into Kennedy's torso.
Kennedy is still on wobbly legs! Can Rook finish him?
Rook drops a shoulder and throws a monster hook that connects perfectly to the side of Kennedy's head, knocking him out cold! Rook is extatic as he celebrates with his cornermen.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:33 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Will Rook!
Will Rook bigged himself up after the win. The crowd seemed to love it.
