PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Murilo Neri (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kyrie Lirving (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kyrie Lirving told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Murilo Neri!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kyrie Lirving!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Shirou Masuda and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lirving misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

Neri closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Lirving quickly recovers to half guard.

Lirving is looking to improve his position.

Lirving is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Neri pulls his head out easily.
Lirving misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Lirving is trying to stand back up but Neri is controlling him

Lirving should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Lirving has eaten all the pies!
Lirving is concentrating on defense, preventing Neri from advancing position.
Neri has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Lirving moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Lirving wants to sweep but no luck.
Neri trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Lirving had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Neri defends it easily.

Neri is looking to advance position but Lirving has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Lirving controlling the position easily from mount.
Neri is trying to reverse the position but instead Lirving has taken his back - oops!
Lirving lands with a nice looking elbow that stuns Neri.

Neri staying busy and making it hard for Lirving to control.
Neri looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.
Lirving has the hooks in. Neri is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
Neri turns into Lirving and is now in his guard.
Neri trying to control the position from guard on top but Lirving is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Lirving holds on and takes a little breather.
Let's hope that Lirving has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Kyrie Lirving was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Neri misses with an uppercut
and Lirving counters with a series of strikes. Neri will be more careful next time no doubt.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Neri misses with a low kick as Lirving jumps back.
Neri avoids the head kick by Lirving.
Neri fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Lirving checks it well.
Lirving shoots in but Neri avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Neri throws a low kick but Lirving avoids it.
Neri circles away from the clinch attempt.
Lirving throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Neri's waist but Neri gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Lirving off to one side.
Murilo Neri has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kyrie Lirving.
Lirving shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Neri as he jumps to the side.
A looping hook to the body misses from Lirving. Neri does a little dance to reset his feet.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Neri tries to score a power double leg takedown but Lirving sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Neri somewhat.

The crowd cheers as Lirving lands an impressive looking overhand right. Neri doesn't seem phased though.

Lirving gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Neri lands a nice elbow from the clinch.


It looks like Kyrie Lirving has been cut.

Lirving has hold of one of Neri's legs. Neri is fighting the takedown attempt but Lirving gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Neri looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Lirving wants to control from the top but Neri keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Kyrie Lirving was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Lirving bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Neri is trying to control Lirving's posture but Lirving avoids it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The ground and pound from Lirving seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.

Neri is looking for a sweep.
Lirving remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Neri takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.

Lirving misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

Neri is working to avoid the ground and pound but Lirving connects with a decent elbow.

Lirving wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Neri, who protects the arm well.
Neri tries to bench press Lirving off him but Lirving keeps the position.

Neri gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Lirving is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Lirving is working for a submission of some sort.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Lirving moves into full mount! Neri won't be happy about that!

Kyrie Lirving showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Neri keeps the fight on the outside.
Neri doesn't manage to clinch there - Lirving circles away.
Lirving closes this distance looking for a takedown but Neri circles away.
Neri tries to close the distance and clinch but Lirving swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Lirving shoots in but no luck this time.
Murilo Neri has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kyrie Lirving.
Nice shot lands for Neri.
Neri looks to land a left hand but Lirving moved out of range nicely.
Lirving displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Neri throws out the jab.
Lirving shoots in for a double leg but Neri sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Neri looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.

Neri has taken the fight to the clinch.
Lirving is trying to pull guard but Neri turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Lirving takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Lirving takes an elbow to the temple.
Neri with the Thai clinch, lands a knee to the head.


That has opened up Kyrie Lirving's cut even more.
Neri lands a knee to the head.
Neri lands an elbow that stopped Lirving in his tracks for a moment.


The cut above Kyrie Lirving's eye is starting to cause him problems now.
Neri with an attempt at a knee that misses.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Neri pushes off an throws an elbow but Lirving leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage.

Neri manages to break the clinch.
Murilo Neri seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Neri tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Lirving manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Neri scores with a hook.


Kyrie Lirving's cut is absolute horrible now. This looks like something out of a horror film with blood covering both fighters.
Neri throws a leg kick but Lirving sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Nice takedown defense from Neri. No joy for Lirving on that attempt.

Neri scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Neri thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Lirving's head.
Lirving is trying to get back to full guard.
Lirving trying to control but Neri postures up.

Neri is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Lirving sees it coming and defends easily.
Neri thows a huge punch but Lirving dodges it nicely.

Neri won't allow Lirving to sweep him here.

Lirving escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Neri gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Lirving keeping moving, preventing Neri from controlling successfully.

Neri has gone for a leg lock! Lirving slips out almost immediately though and dives into Neri's guard.
Lirving is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Murilo Neri has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Lirving trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Neri wants to control but Lirving passes easily into half guard.

Neri is in trouble now - Lirving has advanced to mount!
Neri is squirming around, avoiding Lirving's attempts to control the action.
Neri is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Lirving pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Lirving trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Lirving fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Kyrie Lirving is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Neri is in a horrible position here. Lirving smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Murilo Neri.
I think Lirving has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
