PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Paul Bruens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Hidalgo Montoya (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Bruens kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is River Below. Montoya has chosen El Toro as his entrance music. This should be a great matchup!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 30 - 20 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Paul Bruens!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 24 - 14 - 0, fighting out of New York, Hidalgo Montoya!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Blasius, Albert Achterberg and Paul Aken.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bruens takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Bruens showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Montoya.
Montoya misses with an uppercut. Bruens saw that one coming.
Bruens misses the shot to the body.
Bruens throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Montoya's waist but Montoya gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Bruens off to one side.
Bruens just misses with a punch to the body.
No luck for Montoya with that takedown attempt.
Bruens looks for a takedown but Montoya sprawls well.
Montoya misses with a wild combination.
A looping hook to the body misses from Montoya. Bruens does a little dance to reset his feet.

Montoya misses with a low kick.
Bruens keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Bruens is looking to chop away at Montoya's legs.
Bruens throws a body punch but Montoya moves out of range.
Bruens takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?
Both fighters circling a little - Montoya finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.

Bruens closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Montoya's guard.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Bruens not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Montoya avoids the body shot from Bruens.

Montoya throws a looping overhand right but Bruens ducks down to avoid it.

Montoya misses with an uppercut. Bruens saw that one coming.
Montoya ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Bruens moves away.

Montoya lands a really nice looking cross but Bruens seems unphased.
Montoya lands with a thumping leg kick.
Bruens is looking to wear down Montoya with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
Bruens keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Montoya.
Bruens fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Montoya manages to avoid it.

Bruens on the wrong end of a kick to the body.

Bruens tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.

Montoya closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Bruens to the mat! Bruens manages to get full guard.

Bruens looking to hit a scissor sweep but Montoya is one step ahead there.
Bruens is working hard here to advance position.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Bruens is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hidalgo Montoya dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Bruens uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Montoya.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Bruens.

Montoya shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Montoya was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Montoya is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Bruens is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Montoya is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Bruens has escaped the position, nice work there.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Montoya thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Bruens tries to bench press Montoya off him but Montoya keeps the position.
You can see the frustration on Bruens's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Bruens tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Montoya wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Bruens gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Montoya wants to take a breather but Bruens is having none of it.
Bruens has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Montoya is working away from the top position though.
Bruens tries to roll over but Montoya keeps him under control.
Paul Bruens overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Montoya wants to free his trapped foot but Bruens is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Montoya moves nicely into side control.
Bruens is trying to control Montoya's posture but Montoya avoids it.
Bruens is looking for a sweep.

Montoya tries for a kimura but Bruens is defending well.

Montoya is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Bruens has escaped the position, nice work there.
Montoya tries to advance to mount but Bruens denies him.

Bruens manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Bruens gets full guard.
Montoya trying to control the position from guard on top but Bruens is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Bruens is trying to keep Montoya in close.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Bruens looking for a sweep. Not yet Bruens, not yet.
Montoya trying to control but Bruens is working from the bottom.
Montoya slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Hidalgo Montoya was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Bruens looks to score with a jab to the body but Montoya is just out of range.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Montoya throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hidalgo Montoya showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!



Montoya shoots in and bounces Bruens off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Bruens lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Montoya!

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The cut above Hidalgo Montoya's eye is starting to cause him problems now.

The referee calls the doctor in to look at Hidalgo Montoya's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:46 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Cut). Paul Bruens!
A relieved looking Paul Bruens thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
