Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Chaney!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 16 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, John Askren!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Wesley Smith and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Askren gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Askren keeping moving, preventing Chaney from controlling successfully.
Chaney pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Askren is keeping the position for now.
Chaney trying to control the position from guard on top but Askren is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Askren has his hands on Chaney's head, controlling the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up because James Chaney just wasn't active enough.

Chaney closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Askren quickly recovers to half guard.
Chaney trying to mount his opponent but Askren defends it.
Chaney is looking to take a break and control but Askren is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Chaney stalling away here and it's allowed Askren to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.

and Askren counters with a good low kick that Chaney was not able to check.

Chaney scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of James Chaney.
Chaney darts in trying to clinch
and Askren finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body.
Askren throws a sloppy head kick and Chaney moves out of range easily.
Askren circles away from the clinch attempt
and Askren counters with a stiff right hand.

Chaney fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Askren to the ground. Chaney is now in Askren's guard.

James Chaney overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

letting Askren counter with a right hand.
Chaney throws a combination that misses
and Askren counters with a left and a right that stings Chaney.
James Chaney is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Askren pivots, looking for a leg kick but Chaney is out of range and Askren settles back down.
Chaney tries to clinch
and Askren counters with a straight right hand.

Askren gets caught napping as Chaney dives in and scores a takedown. Askren manages to retain guard.
Chaney postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Chaney wants to get up but he can't break Askren's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Chaney postures up in Askren's guard and throws a big left but Askren blocks it.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Askren fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Chaney has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Chaney really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Askren throws a front kick aimed at Chaney's knee but Chaney avoids it well.

Chaney shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Chaney tries to stand and escape but Askren actually recovers to full guard.

Chaney tries to free his leg and advance position but Askren is retaining full guard.
Askren is pulling down on Chaney's head to control his posture.
Chaney trying to control the position from guard on top but Askren is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The ref stands the fighters back up. James Chaney wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Chaney manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Askren on his heels. He'll look to pass Askren's guard now, I'm sure.

Chaney shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Askren is trying to defend but Chaney finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Askren is concentrating on defense, preventing Chaney from advancing position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Chaney looking to sit in guard and control but Askren gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Askren stands and steps away. Chaney gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Askren has control of Chaney's left arm, preventing Chaney from doing any damage.

Askren has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Let's hope that Askren has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Chaney drives through with a takedown into Askren's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

John Askren has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Chaney is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Askren reverses the position - he's now on top in Chaney's guard.
James Chaney is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Askren connects with a couple of short punches.

And that's the end of the fight!
James Chaney showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Chaney, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
