PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Guil Ribeiro (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and William Conn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Ribeiro might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Run This Town. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Guil Ribeiro!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, William Conn!
The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, David Schapiro and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ribeiro tries to close the distance and clinch but Conn swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Conn gets tackled into the cage by Ribeiro. Ribeiro maintains the clinch.
Conn wants a takedown.
Conn stalling in the clinch but Ribeiro improves position.
Conn working aggressively here.
The referee calls for Conn to work.

Conn manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Conn keeping full guard, as Ribeiro tries to pass.
Conn is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Ribeiro controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

and Conn counters with a one-two to the body.

and Conn counters by moving into the clinch.
Ribeiro throws a knee to the head but misses.
Conn wants to break free but Ribeiro has control.
Ribeiro wants to take the fight to the mat but Conn manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

Conn shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Ribeiro defends it nicely.

The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.

Ribeiro ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Ribeiro no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Conn controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Conn is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Conn is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Ribeiro utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Conn controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

A close round but William Conn will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Conn throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Ribeiro shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Conn is looking to clinch.

Guil Ribeiro seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Conn bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Conn shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Ribeiro as he avoids it easily.

Ribeiro takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.

and Conn counters with a nice body shot.

Ribeiro shoots for a takedown but Conn saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
The fight stays on the outside here - Ribeiro looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Ribeiro manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Conn manages to get himself to full guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Ribeiro tries to free his leg and advance position but Conn is retaining full guard.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. William Conn wasn't active enough on the ground.

Conn forces Ribeiro back against the cage and clinches.
Ribeiro has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Conn is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Conn has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Ribeiro avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Ribeiro breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Conn feints a jab promting Ribeiro to slip. Conn then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Ribeiro slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.

and Conn counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Conn defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Ribeiro.
William Conn seems to be getting the better of the standup.
No luck for Conn with that takedown attempt.
Ribeiro closes the distance but Conn moves to the side
and Conn counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Ribeiro tries to clinch but Conn moves out of range.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Ribeiro is pressed up against the cage. Conn has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Ribeiro down to the mat. Ribeiro avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Conn fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Ribeiro on the side of the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but William Conn will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


A lazy left from Conn finds it's target.

Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Ribeiro.

Ribeiro escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Conn ducks down and throws a hook to the body.

Conn slaps away a takedown attempt from Ribeiro, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Conn throws a nice looking combination but Ribeiro bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Ribeiro drops down looking for an ankle pick but Conn pulls his leg out and moves away.
Horrible takedown by Conn or perhaps it was just good defense by Ribeiro which made him look bad.

Conn scores with a one two! Ribeiro had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Conn misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Ribeiro moves into the clinch successfully.
Ribeiro is working for takedown but Conn is calmly controlling the position for now.

Conn seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Guil Ribeiro.
I think Conn has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
