PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Mason Scott (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Faisal al (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mason Scott!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Faisal al!
The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Anthony Taglia and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Scott gets the takedown into side control.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
al tries to escape but Scott is in control.
Scott throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and al works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.
al has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Scott is working away from the top position though.
Scott drops an elbow to the side of al's head.
Scott thows a huge punch but al dodges it nicely.
al trying to control but Scott postures up.

Scott takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Scott is looking to clinch.

al looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
al displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Scott.
al throws a hook but Scott avoids it easily.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Scott pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
al shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Scott sprawls well. Scott wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. al gets slowly back to his feet.
al defending well as Scott loads up on a big left hand.
Scott tries to bum rush al with a series of wild strikes but al uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Jab, jab by al - just one landing.
Scott misses with a combination
and Scott takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Scott shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts al as he jumps to the side.
al closes the distance and clinches up with Scott, looking for a takedown. al pushes Scott against the cage but Scott circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Mason Scott has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Faisal al.

al manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Scott on his heels. He'll look to pass Scott's guard now, I'm sure.
Scott is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
al loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
al throws a big elbow that misses.

al throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Scott works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
al stops Scott from standing up.
Scott is breathing heavily.
al postures up in Scott's guard and throws a big left but Scott blocks it.
Scott wants to sweep but no luck.
al throwing strikes but missing.

al tries to stand but Scott is controlling from the bottom.
Scott utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

al thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
al working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Scott looking to hit a scissor sweep but al is one step ahead there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Faisal al dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Good anti-grappling being displayed by al as Scott tries to tie him up.

al has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Scott is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
al has Scott pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Scott manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Scott manages to break the clinch.

Scott gets caught flat footed, as al shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
al has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
al throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Scott works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Scott is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst al is controlling him.
Scott looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

Scott on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Scott tries to get out of the position.

al throws a strike but Scott rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

al manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Scott manages to get himself to full guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
al trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Scott knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for al on the ground.
al postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
al with a flurry of punches that miss.

Scott is working an open guard so al takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Scott darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
al avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Scott.
al tries to roll over but Scott keeps him under control.
al tries to kick Scott off but Scott keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Scott is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
al is refusing to be controlled, as Scott sits in half guard.

al moves into full guard.
al trying to keep a closed guard but Scott is proving a slippery customer.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
al keeping moving, preventing Scott from controlling successfully.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
al misses with a series of wild punches.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Faisal al showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


al changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Scott tries to avoid it but al manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Scott to the ground. Scott escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Scott has a takedown stuffed.

Scott shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Scott accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
al wants to sweep here but Scott controlling him for the moment.

Scott is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Scott looking to sit in guard and control but al gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Scott pushes al off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Scott tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but al swivels and escapes.

Scott closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
al wants to control but Scott is keeping busy.
Scott misses with a head shot. al uses the momentum to regain guard.
al wants to stand but Scott is controlling the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

al is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Scott defends well.

Scott lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

al working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Scott has passed into half guard!
Scott thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Scott is trying to control. al wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

al is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Scott pulls his head out easily.
Scott thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed al's head.
al is looking to improve his position.

Scott winds up and cracks al with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Scott stalling away here and it's allowed al to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Scott looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Scott won't allow al to sweep him here.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Mason Scott showed his dominance in that final round.
I think al has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
