PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Alex Hopkins (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bruce Lee (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hopkins's entrance music is Coming home -Dirty money. A fine choice. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Bruce Lee was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Alex Hopkins!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Bruce Lee!
The judges for this bout are Wagner Zegers, Paulsen Ambrosius and Patrick Alders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lee looks for a takedown but Hopkins sprawls well.
Lee throws a right and a left that both miss.
Hopkins lands with a cross.
Lee walks into a stiff left hand from Hopkins.
Hopkins scores with the left hand. Lee knows he should have avoided that one.
Bruce Lee seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hopkins scores with a jab to the jaw.
Lee tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Hopkins manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Lee tries to sprawl but Hopkins drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Lee has one foot on Hopkins's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Hopkins slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Hopkins connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Lee's hands.
Hopkins takes a kick to the side of the head.
Lee throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
The fight stays on the outside here - Lee looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Lee motions for Hopkins to come forward. Lee throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Hopkins lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
Good leg kick by Lee there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Lee moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Hopkins moves out of range of the body kick from Lee.
Hopkins is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.

Lee connects with a crisp jab.
Lee shoots in but Hopkins avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Hopkins bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Lee's head.

Lee throws a low kick but Hopkins avoids it.

Hopkins lands a leg kick that knocks Lee off balance momentarily.
Lee tries to bum rush Hopkins with a series of wild strikes but Hopkins uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Hopkins looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Lee!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Lee is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Hopkins tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Hopkins has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Hopkins is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Lee has escaped the position, nice work there.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Lee is looking to regain half guard here but Hopkins keeps moving and retains side control.

Hopkins tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Hopkins has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Hopkins thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Hopkins tries for a kimura but Lee is defending well.

Hopkins wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Lee, who protects the arm well.
Lee is looking to regain half guard here but Hopkins keeps moving and retains side control.

Hopkins is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Lee knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Lee tries to bench press Hopkins off him but Hopkins keeps the position.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Hopkins is trying to work for a kimura but Lee is defending well.
Lee won't allow Hopkins to pass to mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alex Hopkins dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Ouch! a nice leg kick from Lee, right into the meat.
Lee shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Hopkins as he jumps to the side.
Alex Hopkins is winning the standup battle so far.
Lee tries to clinch up.
Lee throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Lee.
Hopkins misses with a body shot.

Lee closes the distance and pushes Hopkins back into the cage.

Lee has picked Hopkins up - he's going for a ride! Lee dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Hopkins tries to get to full guard but Lee has control of the leg.

Lee seems to be working for a kimura but Hopkins defends the submission attempt.

Hopkins looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

Hopkins actively working from the bottom here.
Lee is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

Lee is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Hopkins doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Lee.

Lee seems to be looking for submissions.

Lee is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Lee trying to mount his opponent but Hopkins defends it.
Hopkins is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Hopkins looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.

Lee seems to be looking for submissions.
Ground and pound from Lee.

Lee wants to work for an arm triangle but Hopkins is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Lee is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Hopkins is just riding it out for now. Lee eventually gives up the hold.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Lee is in close to Hopkins's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Hopkins is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Hopkins is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Lee sees it coming and defends easily.
Lee wants to control but Hopkins is keeping busy.

Lee looking for submissions off his back.

Hopkins is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Hopkins looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Bruce Lee showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Hopkins pulls out of a head kick attempt.
The fighters circling - Hopkins throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Lee tries a head kick but it misses.
Hopkins lands with a thumping leg kick.
Hopkins steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Lee. That one must have hurt.
Hopkins jabs Lee to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Lee shoots for a double leg takedown but Hopkins sprawls well. He's pushed Lee's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Hopkins throws a quick inside leg kick.
Lee moves in looking to clinch but Hopkins pushes him off.
Hopkins clobbers Lee with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Hopkins stuns Lee with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.

Lee closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Lee is trying to pull guard but Hopkins has him pressed against the cage.

Alex Hopkins has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Bruce Lee.
Lee tries a knee to the head but he's missed.

Lee drops down looking for an ankle pick but Hopkins pulls his leg out and moves away.
Lee has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Hopkins finds it's way round the side to connect with Lee's head.

Lee fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Hopkins avoids it really well and circles away.
Lee takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Lee tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Hopkins swivels and escapes.
Hopkins lands a lovely overhand right.
Hopkins lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Lee shoots in for a takedown but Hopkins shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Hopkins scoring well with a low kick there.
Hopkins bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Lee takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Hopkins moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Lee throws a head kick that misses.
Lee gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.
Lee wants to clinch up but Hopkins keeps it at a distance.
Bruce Lee is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Hopkins keeps the fight on the outside.
Lee shoots in looking for a takedown. Hopkins tries to sprawl out of it but Lee keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Hopkins manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Hopkins fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Hopkins lands a glancing blow to the side of Lee's head.
Hopkins lands with an uppercut that bounces Lee off the cage and back into range.
Hopkins jabs Lee right on the nose. Lee blinks but takes it well.

Alex Hopkins overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Hopkins is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Lee is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Hopkins passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Lee!

Hopkins with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

Hopkins blocks Lee's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom.
Lee bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

And that's the end of the fight!
Alex Hopkins showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Hopkins has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

A less than humble Alex Hopkins misjudged his post fight interview somewhat and came across a little too arrogant whilst trying to hype up his own abilities.
