PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Nickolas Diaz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Hollis Melendez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Melendez has chosen Brooklyn Zoo as his entrance music. Nickolas Diaz had real problems making weight for this fight. After initially coming in at 186.6lbs, he had two hours to make the official fight weight. He made it but it will have taken a lot out of him to cut those extra few pounds. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 2 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Nickolas Diaz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Hollis Melendez!
The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Micheangelo Fripello and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Diaz shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Diaz was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Melendez is not content to let Diaz control the position.

Diaz working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Melendez is trying to improve his position.
Diaz trying to control the action but Melendez is working from the bottom.

Diaz tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
Melendez is looking to regain half guard here but Diaz keeps moving and retains side control.
Diaz controls the position from side control.
Diaz postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Melendez sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Diaz lands a nice short elbow.
Diaz is trying to control. Melendez wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Diaz is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Melendez doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Diaz.

Diaz is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Melendez is trying to get back to full guard.

Melendez is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Diaz pulls his head out easily.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Diaz wants to lay and pray for a moment but Melendez keeps working.
Melendez keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Diaz wants to take a breather but Melendez is having none of it.
Diaz wants to stand up but Melendez is controlling the position.
Melendez moves into full guard.
Diaz stopping the sweep attempt from Melendez.
Diaz has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Melendez is looking for a triangle here but Diaz uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

Diaz tries to advance to mount but Melendez denies him.
Diaz trying to control the action but Melendez is working from the bottom.
Melendez is trying to improve his position.
Melendez manages to get back to half guard.

Melendez is looking for a sweep. Diaz is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Diaz seems to be working for a kimura but Melendez defends the submission attempt.
Diaz trying to control from Melendez's half guard. Melendez has other ideas though and has regained full guard.
Diaz lands a couple of elbows.
Melendez looking for a sweep. Not yet Melendez, not yet.

Melendez is looking to cinch up a triangle. Diaz throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Melendez's body to avoid the submission. Melendez has instead reached around Diaz's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Melendez arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 8:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Hollis Melendez!
Hollis Melendez gave a mention to Dragon in his post fight interview. That will please them (and hopefully generate some sales).
