PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Brian Banks (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Reuben Whistler (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Reuben Whistler was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Brian Banks!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Reuben Whistler!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Whistler throws a hook but Banks blocks it.
Whistler thows a left - swing and a miss!
Banks ducks under a wild hook from Whistler.
Whistler throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
Whistler ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Whistler should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

Banks gets caught flat footed, as Whistler shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Whistler tries to free his leg and advance position but Banks is retaining full guard.

Banks looking for a guillotine here but Whistler defends easily.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Whistler throwing strikes but missing.
Banks lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Whistler!
Banks throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Whistler because Banks loaded up on that one.

Banks looking to control but Whistler is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Banks looking to ground and pound but Whistler is blocking nicely.

Banks looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

Banks working for a guillotine from mount but Whistler is in no mood to give up.
Whistler really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Banks. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Banks is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Whistler has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Banks really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Banks throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Banks will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Whistler is trying desperately to improve position.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Banks thowing shots but they're missing.

Banks is working for a guillotine from mount but Whistler frees his head quite easily.
Banks tries to control but Whistler wriggling away.

Banks has hold of Whistler's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Whistler manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Banks is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Whistler has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Whistler!

Whistler loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Whistler is looking to stand up but Banks won't let him.

Banks throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Whistler escapes and throws Banks's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Banks prevents Whistler from moving into mount.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Banks is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Whistler off and has taken his back!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Will Banks go for the finish here or will he try and keep control of the position?
Banks keeps control of the position easily here as Whistler tries to buck him off.

A close round but Reuben Whistler will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

and Banks counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Banks keeps control of Whistler as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

It looks like Brian Banks has been cut.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Whistler closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Banks to the mat! Banks manages to get full guard.
Whistler trying to control but Banks is working from the bottom.

Banks has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Whistler can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Whistler in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Banks manages to escape and get back to his feet.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Whistler swings for the body but Banks moves out of range.
Reuben Whistler seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Whistler throws a right and a left that both miss.
Banks shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Whistler pinned against the cage. Whistler gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Banks walks into a straight right hand from Whistler.
Banks uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Whistler.
Banks has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Whistler finds it's way round the side to connect with Banks's head.
Brian Banks is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Whistler smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.

Banks forces Whistler back against the cage and clinches.
Banks tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Whistler just stands there and leans against the cage.

Banks lands an elbow that stopped Whistler in his tracks for a moment.
Whistler is trying to push Banks away but Banks has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Banks is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Whistler is defending well.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

A close second round but Reuben Whistler will probably get the nod - 10:9.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Banks is trying to trip Whistler. He has hold of a leg but Whistler is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Banks persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Banks frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Whistler sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Banks looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Banks is keen to just control but Whistler is a slippery customer.

Whistler avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Banks.

Banks is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Banks is working for a kimura but Whistler is defending it quite comfortably.
Banks not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Banks wants to lay and pray for a moment but Whistler keeps working.
