PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Michael Gonzales (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joe Powell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Michael Gonzales !
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Joe Powell!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Anthony Taglia and Jorge Garcia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Powell gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
letting Gonzales counter with a right hand.


It looks like Joe Powell has been cut.

Powell clinches with his opponent.

Powell breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Powell drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Powell wants to control from the top but Gonzales keeps moving.

Gonzales has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Powell off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Powell tries to clinch but Gonzales is having none of it.
Powell tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Gonzales counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Powell's guard now.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Gonzales tries to free his leg and advance position but Powell is retaining full guard.

Gonzales is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Gonzales 's corner is telling him to maintain position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gonzales passes Powell's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Powell is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Gonzales drops an elbow to the side of Powell's head.

Gonzales is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Gonzales is trying to work for a kimura but Powell is defending well.
Powell is trying to control but can't.
Gonzales prevents Powell from improving his position.
Powell wants to get back to full guard but Gonzales has mounted him!
Powell tries to lock up and control but Gonzales gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Powell is working to get back to half guard.
Powell really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gonzales . If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Powell is squirming around, avoiding Gonzales 's attempts to control the action.

Gonzales tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Gonzales is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Powell can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

A bone on bone clash there as Gonzales blocks the leg kick.
Michael Gonzales is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Gonzales lands a body shot.
Powell walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Gonzales shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Powell defends it nicely.
Powell shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Gonzales but Gonzales pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Powell walks into a left hand.
Powell connects with a jab.
Powell tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Gonzales counters with a flying knee. Nice.

Gonzales shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Powell pinned against the cage. Powell gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Gonzales fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Michael Gonzales . That's going to take a lot out of him.

Gonzales gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Gonzales tries to score a power double leg takedown but Powell sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Gonzales somewhat.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Gonzales misses with a takedown attempt - Powell sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Gonzales looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Gonzales leaves Powell with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Powell shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Gonzales pinned against the cage. Gonzales gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Powell shoots in looking for a takedown but Gonzales manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Powell's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Gonzales bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Gonzales tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Gonzales has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Powell is looking for a sweep.

Gonzales takes a little break here. Powell wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
Gonzales seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Powell for as long as he can get away with.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Gonzales creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Powell sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Gonzales circles away from the clinch attempt.
Horrible takedown by Powell or perhaps it was just good defense by Gonzales which made him look bad.

Powell shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Gonzales sprawls well. Gonzales wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Powell gets slowly back to his feet.

Powell takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Powell stuffs the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Michael Gonzales . That's going to take a lot out of him.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Powell.
Powell tries to score a power double leg takedown but Gonzales sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Powell somewhat.
Powell tries to close the distance and clinch up but Gonzales swats him away and circles back towards the center.

and Gonzales counters with a nice double leg into side control. Powell won't be happy with that.

Powell is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
A lull in the action here as Gonzales stalls from top position.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Gonzales has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Powell is not in a great position here, taking some shots.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Gonzales , winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
