PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between JJ Thomas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mikhail Grigorjev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, JJ Thomas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mikhail Grigorjev!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Paul Gruel and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Thomas dives in and scores a takedown into Grigorjev's guard.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Grigorjev keeping moving, preventing Thomas from controlling successfully.
Thomas advances to half guard.

Thomas is looking for a kimura here.

Thomas is working for a kimura but Grigorjev is defending it quite comfortably.

Thomas looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Thomas wants to pass to mount but Grigorjev is defending the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Thomas is looking for a kimura but Grigorjev is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Thomas to get the leverage.
Thomas stops Grigorjev from getting back to his feet.
Grigorjev tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Thomas manages to move to mount!

Thomas is working for a guillotine from mount but Grigorjev frees his head quite easily.

Thomas working for a submission but Grigorjev is keeping him at bay.

Thomas swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Grigorjev is now in Thomas's guard. A big mistake from Thomas there, giving up the dominant position!

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Thomas is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Grigorjev is aware though and is defending well.

Thomas is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Thomas has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Grigorjev is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Thomas.
Grigorjev wants to stand but Thomas has his arm trapped.
Thomas sneaks back into half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Grigorjev seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Thomas is trying to get back to full guard.
Grigorjev tries to stand but can't do so whilst Thomas controls his leg.
Thomas tries to roll over but Grigorjev keeps him under control.

Thomas actively working from the bottom here.
Thomas is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Grigorjev wants to stand up but Thomas has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Thomas manages to get to full guard.
Thomas looking to control.

Thomas has his foot on Grigorjev's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Grigorjev works his way back into a safe position though.

Thomas looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Thomas looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Grigorjev has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Thomas is proving hard to escape from.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

JJ Thomas dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Grigorjev takes a swing at Thomas's ribcage but misses.

Thomas closes the distance and clinches.
Grigorjev missing with knees to the body.
Thomas tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Grigorjev just stands there and leans against the cage.
Grigorjev looking to throw knees to the head but Thomas is blocking nicely.
Thomas fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Thomas takes an elbow to the forehead.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Thomas.
Grigorjev lands a nice elbow from the clinch.

Thomas successfully pulls guard.
Grigorjev has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Thomas is proving hard to escape from.

Grigorjev has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Thomas to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Grigorjev is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Thomas pulls down on the head and he's put Grigorjev to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). JJ Thomas!
A relieved looking JJ Thomas thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
