PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Madison Grant (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matt Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Grant comes into the arena with donald wheres your troosers blaring out of the sound system. On his way into the cage it seems that Madison Grant has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Madison Grant seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Matt Smith!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, James Atkins and William Gold.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Grant shoots in and bounces Smith off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Grant loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Grant throwing strikes but missing.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Grant thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Grant stopping the sweep attempt from Smith.
Grant postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Grant has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Smith can do anything to dispel that myth.
Grant distracts Smith with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Smith can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Grant controls the pace.
Grant throwing strikes from guard but Smith blocks nicely.

Grant drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Grant jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Smith really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Grant. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Grant is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Madison Grant dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Smith pivots, looking for a leg kick but Grant is out of range and Smith settles back down.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Smith darts in and out, connecting with a jab.


It looks like Madison Grant has been cut.
Smith tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Matt Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Smith throws a leg kick which misses Grant's front leg but catches the back leg as Grant tries to avoid it.
Grant tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Smith defends well and Grant ends up having to push Smith into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Grant blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Grant tries to score a body lock takedown but Smith shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Grant is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Smith lands an uppercut.
Grant has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Smith after a bit of a struggle.

Smith breaks the clinch.
Smith shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
Matt Smith is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Grant slips a jab from Smith.
Smith finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Madison Grant is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Grant walks forward, straight into a front kick from Smith.
Smith pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Smith fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Grant.

Smith connects with a leg kick. Grant looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
Smith throws a nice outside leg kick.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Smith tries to score with a low kick but Grant moves his leg out of the way.
Smith lands a nice looking kick to the body. Grant takes a step back to recover.
Smith misses with a wild body shot.
Smith misses with a low kick.
Grant gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Smith counters with a nice low kick that buckles Grant's knee momentarily.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Grant sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
A solid leg kick lands there for Smith.
Grant fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Smith avoids it really well and circles away.
Smith wants to land a leg kick but Grant is out of range.
Smith throws a leg kick that is checked
and Grant counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.

Grant shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Smith is trying to defend but Grant finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Grant is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Smith is staying active underneath Grant, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Grant passes to full mount!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Grant misses with a head shot.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Grant is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Smith to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Smith shrugs it off.
Grant lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Grant cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matt Smith showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Horrible takedown by Grant or perhaps it was just good defense by Smith which made him look bad.
Grant misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Smith chopping away at his opponent's legs.
Smith moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Smith takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Smith throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Grant.
Matt Smith seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Grant shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Smith as he avoids it easily.
Grant stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Smith.
Smith throws a sloppy head kick and Grant moves out of range easily.
Smith defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Grant.
Grant on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Smith. Smith obviously looking to wear him down.

Grant looks for a takedown but Smith sprawls well.

Smith gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Grant to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Smith seems keen to control Grant's posture.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

I would just about give that final round to Matt Smith.
