PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kaapo Hannuksela (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Whisky Dan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hannuksela comes to the cage accompanied by The Sex Pistols - Submission. The crowd seem to be enjoying Dan's choice of entrance music: "I'm a man" by Black Strobe. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Kaapo Hannuksela!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Whisky Dan!
The judges for this bout are Matti Vanhoillinen, Roosa Järviläinen and Anni Minnemäki.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hannuksela closes the distance and clinches up with Dan, looking for a takedown. Hannuksela pushes Dan against the cage but Dan circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Hannuksela scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Dan is trying is best to control the position here.
Hannuksela seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Dan does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Dan is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Hannuksela's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Hannuksela's back!

Hannuksela defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Dan's arms.

Hannuksela is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Dan gets his way!
Hannuksela breaks Dan's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Hannuksela changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Dan tries to avoid it but Hannuksela manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Dan to the ground. Dan escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kaapo Hannuksela. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Hannuksela changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Dan tries to avoid it but Hannuksela manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Dan to the ground. Dan escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Hannuksela fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Dan ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Hannuksela moves away.
Dan misses with the combination.

Dan feints and as Hannuksela raises his hands in defense, Dan changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Dan stands up and waves to Hannuksela to follow him.

and Dan counters with a single leg into guard. Hannuksela didn't expect that.

Dan works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Dan works his way into side control.
Hannuksela tries to bench press Dan off him but Dan keeps the position.
The strikes coming from Dan are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Hannuksela is looking to reverse the position.

Dan sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Hannuksela is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Dan advances to full mount.
Dan lands a big elbow.
Dan dominating with strikes here.
Dan tries to control but Hannuksela wriggling away.

Dan is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Hannuksela is surviving well by controlling Dan's body position as best he can.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hannuksela is wriggling around trying to escape.

Dan is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Hannuksela can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Dan wants to finish this one by submission but Hannuksela is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Dan.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Hannuksela fails with the takedown

and Dan counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Dan.
Dan tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Hannuksela smiles and moves away.

and Hannuksela takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Dan pulls out of a head kick attempt.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hannuksela throws a low kick, looking for Dan's leg but Dan calmly moves out of range.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Dan lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.

Dan bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Hannuksela is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Dan off and has taken his back!
Dan manages to reverse the position and now he's in Hannuksela's guard. Nice work there by Dan.
Dan wants to control from the top but Hannuksela keeps moving.
Hannuksela tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Dan thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Dan stands and throws Hannuksela's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Dan is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Hannuksela knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hannuksela can't keep his opponent in guard - Dan advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Hannuksela tries to roll over but Dan keeps him under control.

Dan looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Dan takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Hannuksela wants to get back to full guard.
Dan is looking to take a break and control but Hannuksela is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Dan frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Hannuksela tries to lock up and control but Dan gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Hannuksela flailing away with punches but nothing is landing.

Dan get's back to his feet.
Dan will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Dan misses with the combination.
Dan throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Hannuksela.
Hannuksela has his takedown stuffed
and Dan counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Whisky Dan showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! And we move into the final round!


Dan misses with a series of wild punches.
Hannuksela looks to clinch

and Dan counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Hannuksela trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Hannuksela throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Hannuksela is on top in guard.

Dan working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Hannuksela doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Hannuksela manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Dan has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Hannuksela can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Dan is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Dan is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Hannuksela.

Hannuksela is staying active underneath Dan, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Hannuksela is looking to control Dan's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Hannuksela avoid being mounted?

Kaapo Hannuksela has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Dan has Hannuksela pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Hannuksela manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Dan drops down looking for an ankle pick but Hannuksela pulls his leg out and moves away.
Dan throws a right and a left that Hannuksela avoids nicely.

Whisky Dan comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Dan has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
