PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Tony Jaa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Berik Yawoka (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Yawoka has chosen keep running up that hill as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 23 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Tony Jaa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 12 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Berik Yawoka!
The judges for this bout are Ivan Kurochkin, Konstantin Menshow and Aleksei Zolotukhin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Yawoka shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Jaa will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Jaa tries to clinch up but Yawoka circles away and keeps his distance.
Yawoka fails with a takedown attempt.
Jaa avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Jaa defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Yawoka.
Jaa stuffs the takedown.
Tony Jaa has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Berik Yawoka.

Jaa rushes Yawoka and pushes him back against the ropes in a clinch.
Yawoka tries to pull guard but Jaa won't allow it.
Yawoka is looking to take this one to the mat.

Jaa putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Yawoka in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body.
Yawoka is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Jaa pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Jaa is working for a takedown up against the ropes. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Jaa jumps into guard, dragging Yawoka to the mat.

Jaa escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Yawoka gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Yawoka postures up.

Yawoka tries to free his leg and advance position but Jaa is retaining full guard.

Jaa looking for a guillotine here but Yawoka defends easily.
Jaa wants to sweep here but Yawoka controlling him for the moment.
Yawoka trying to control but Jaa is working from the bottom.

Jaa throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.

Yawoka forces his way into half guard.
Yawoka working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Yawoka is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Jaa is just riding it out for now. Yawoka eventually gives up the hold.
Jaa is looking for a sweep. Yawoka is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Yawoka is working for a kimura but Jaa is defending it quite comfortably.
Yawoka is trying to control the action in half guard but Jaa is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Yawoka lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Jaa avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Yawoka.

Yawoka is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Jaa sees it coming and defends easily.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Yawoka is looking to advance position but Jaa won't allow it.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Yawoka wants to lay and pray for a moment but Jaa keeps working.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Berik Yawoka will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Jaa looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Horrible takedown by Yawoka or perhaps it was just good defense by Jaa which made him look bad.
Jaa looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Yawoka is fending him off so far but Jaa persists. Nope, Yawoka circles away and we're back to standing.
Jaa circles away from the clinch attempt.
Yawoka tries for a takedown but Jaa sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Jaa fails with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tony Jaa. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Yawoka goes for a double leg but Jaa avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the ropes as Jaa continues to drive forward.

Yawoka works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.

Well, if Yawoka is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Yawoka is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Yawoka is looking for a kimura but Jaa is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Yawoka to get the leverage.
Jaa is staying active underneath Yawoka, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Yawoka has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Yawoka seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Jaa is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!
