PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Chuck Mate (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tim Du (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Chuck Mate!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Tim Du!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Damien Edna and Donatello Bradman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Du shoots in and drives through. Mate sprawls well.
Mate throws a head kick that misses
and Du counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Mate throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Du.
Du tries to close the distance and clinch up but Mate swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Mate has closed the distance and engaged Du in a clinch.
Du tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Mate avoids it.
Du tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Mate smiles and moves away.
Mate swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Du tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Mate paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Mate slaps away a takedown attempt from Du, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Chuck Mate has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tim Du.
Mate throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Du takes the fight into the clinch.
Du using the Thai clinch to land knees to the body.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Mate breaks the clinch.
Mate keeps the fight on the outside.

Mate rushes Du and presses him up against the cage.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Mate breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Mate has managed to clinch.
Mate gets underhooks to prevent Du's takedown attempt.

Du manages to break the clinch.
Du blocks a head kick by Mate.

Mate darts in and clinches Du up against the cage.

Du has clasped his hands together around Mate's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Du throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Mate on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Mate tries to get out of the position.
Du working the ground and pound.
Mate tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Du wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Du trying to control the position but Mate is working away.
Mate is looking for a sweep.
Mate wants to get back to his feet.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
An elbow from Du crashes against the mat.
Mate tries to bench press Du off him but Du keeps the position.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Mate takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Mate wants to control but Du postures up.
Du wants to lay and pray for a moment but Mate keeps working.
Du fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Du trying to control the position but Mate is working away.
Mate is pushing Du's head away, looking to escape. Du manages to hold on to the position though.
Du tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
Mate tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Du presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
Du trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Du breaks from Mate's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Mate can't escape the position.
Mate wants to hold on but Du pushes him away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
The referee warns Mate that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Du has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Du prevents Mate from getting the reversal.
Mate blocking the ground and pound.
Mate wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.
Mate knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Du on the ground.
Du with shots to the head and body - Mate looks very uncomfortable down there.
Mate is really trying hard to get back to his feet.
Mate takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.


Mate is rocked!

Du has hold of Mate's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Mate manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Oh Mate is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Du with a couple of short strikes.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Du looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
Du punishing his opponent with strikes.
Mate takes a big shot to the dome and his eyes have rolled back in his head! Du's killer instinct has kicked in as he finishes the fight with more strikes. Impressive finish.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Tim Du!
