The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Matsumoto keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Pope takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
A combination from Pope does no damage.
Pope with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Pope scores with the left hand. Matsumoto knows he should have avoided that one.
Pope moves in looking to clinch but Matsumoto pushes him off.
Pope looks to land a right hand but Matsumoto moved out of range.
Pope lands a lovely overhand right.
Matsumoto blocks a jab.
We've been hearing reports that Matsumoto has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.

Pope throws a quick inside leg kick.
A slow jab from Pope misses its intended target.
A looping hook to the body misses from Matsumoto. Pope does a little dance to reset his feet.
Matsumoto uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Pope.

Matsumoto closes the distance and clinches up with Pope, looking for a takedown. Matsumoto pushes Pope against the cage but Pope circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Matsumoto tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Pope was well out of range. Poor timing from Matsumoto.
Pope thows a left - swing and a miss!

Pope throws a shot from downtown. Matsumoto moves away and avoids it.
Pope misses with a hook. Matsumoto ducked under it nicely.
Matsumoto keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Matsumoto throws a looping overhand right but Pope ducks down to avoid it.
Pope looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Pope slips a straight right by Matsumoto.
Pope slaps away a takedown attempt from Matsumoto, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Matsumoto throws the left hand but Pope avoids the punch easily.
Pope blocks a jab.
Matsumoto misses with a hook.
Michael Pope is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Pope connects with a right hand. Matsumoto shakes it off.
It looks like Makao Matsumoto has been cut.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Matsumoto swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Pope lands with a big left! Matsumoto is wobbled badly! Pope comes in with a flurry of punches and drops Matsumoto to the floor. The ref jumps in to save him from unneccessary punishment.

Michael Pope was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
