PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Par Saukko (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Esko Aho (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Par Saukko!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Esko Aho!
The judges for this bout are Matti Vanhoillinen, Roosa Järviläinen and Johanna Lukiainen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Aho tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Saukko paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Saukko clinches with his opponent.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Aho tries to break the clinch but Saukko is controlling the position.
Saukko wants to break the clinch but can't.
Aho is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Aho looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Saukko misses with a knee strike.
Aho is trying to pull guard but Saukko turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Saukko tries a knee to the head but Aho blocks it.
Aho tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Saukko's elbow.

Aho is trying to maintain a safe position but Saukko gets an underhook and turns Aho into the cage.

Saukko throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Saukko lands a big head kick that sends Aho tumbling to the mat! Saukko takes a step backwards and waves Aho back to his feet - he wants the finish!


It looks like Esko Aho has been cut.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Saukko gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Aho sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Aho trying to control but Saukko is working from the bottom.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Esko Aho was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Saukko lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Aho circles away quickly and effectively.

Saukko misses with a head kick.
Aho avoids a kick to the body.
Aho shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Saukko sprawls well. Saukko wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Aho gets slowly back to his feet.
Aho changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Saukko tries to avoid it but Aho manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Saukko to the ground. Saukko escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Par Saukko has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Esko Aho.
Saukko uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Aho.
Saukko misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Saukko tries to sprawl but Aho drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Aho decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
Aho misses with a few strikes there.
The fight stays on the outside here - Aho looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Par Saukko seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Saukko takes a jab right on the kisser.

A nice inside leg kick there by Saukko. That's going to slow Aho down.

Saukko moves into the clinch.
Aho working hard to break the clinch.
Aho is trying to pull guard but Saukko has him pressed against the cage.

Saukko breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Aho will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Aho throws a sloppy head kick and Saukko moves out of range easily.

Saukko is looking light on his feet compared to last time was saw him fight.
Aho on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Aho fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Saukko takes a swing at Aho's ribcage but misses.

Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Saukko.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Aho takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.

Aho shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Saukko napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Saukko is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Aho is controlling him well.

Aho stands up and beckons Saukko to his feet.
Aho blocks a head kick by Saukko.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Aho throws a combination that misses
letting Saukko counter with a right hand.

Saukko fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Aho, pushing him back against the cage.
Saukko with the Thai clinch, lands a knee to the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Par Saukko dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Esko Aho's cut.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Aho changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Saukko tries to avoid it but Aho manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Saukko to the ground. Saukko escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Aho has managed to clinch.
Saukko is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Aho is defending well for now.

Saukko breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Saukko pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Aho tries for a takedown but Saukko sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Saukko throws a body kick that misses.
Aho is looking to clinch.
Saukko misses with a body shot.

Saukko throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Aho.
Aho fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Saukko avoids it really well and circles away.
Par Saukko has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Esko Aho.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Aho is defended easily by Saukko.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Aho feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Aho shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Saukko as he jumps to the side.

Aho darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Saukko manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Aho keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.

Aho decides to pull guard.
Saukko wants to get up but he can't break Aho's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Aho bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Saukko's guard.

Saukko uses the cage to get back to his feet.
The fight stays on the outside here - Aho looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Aho decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Aho thows a huge punch but Saukko dodges it nicely.
Saukko wants to get back to his feet.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Esko Aho wasn't active enough on the ground.
Saukko tries to land a front kick but Aho steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Aho looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

A close second round but Esko Aho will probably get the nod - 10:9.

Aho has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Saukko uses from the top position.

Aho takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Aho is nestled in close to Saukko, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Aho is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Saukko to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Saukko shrugs it off.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Saukko's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.
Aho has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Aho jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Saukko manages to avoid the submission attempt.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Par Saukko.
I think Saukko has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
