PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ray Charles (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Yrjo Pieru (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Charles's entrance music is blue moon. A fine choice. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ray Charles!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Yrjo Pieru!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Gwen Towbar and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Charles looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Pieru is fending him off so far but Charles persists. Nope, Pieru circles away and we're back to standing.
Horrible takedown by Charles or perhaps it was just good defense by Pieru which made him look bad.

Charles decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Pieru is staying active underneath Charles, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Charles passes to side control.
Pieru tries to buck Charles off but Charles is having none of it.
Pieru is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Pieru is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Pieru gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Pieru won't allow Charles to pass to mount.
Pieru is trying to stand up here but Charles is controlling him well.
The fighters are battling for position here. Pieru manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Charles postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Charles is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Pieru is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Charles drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Pieru manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Charles has Pieru in his guard.
Charles utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Pieru wants to control from the top but Charles keeps moving.
Charles is trying to control the position but Pieru postures up.
Charles throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

Charles has his foot on Pieru's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Pieru works his way back into a safe position though.
Charles is breathing heavily.
Pieru looking to pass the guard.
Pieru chips away with some ground and pound.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Charles has momentary wrist control but Pieru slips an elbow through the middle.
Pieru is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Pieru loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Charles controls Pieru momentarily but Pieru frees himself.

Charles escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Pieru gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Charles has momentary wrist control but Pieru slips an elbow through the middle.
Pieru stands and throws Charles's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Pieru works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.

Charles takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Pieru tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
Pieru scores with a couple of short elbows.
Charles is trying to get back to half guard.
Pieru in side control lands a decent elbow.
Pieru happy to just control the position for now.

Charles tries to strike from the bottom but misses.

Pieru working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Pieru lands an elbow.
Pieru trying to control the action but Charles is working from the bottom.

Pieru goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Charles has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Pieru but great work by Charles.
Pieru is not in a great position here, taking some shots.

Pieru tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Pieru is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Charles is controlling him well.
Pieru misses with a strike from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Yrjo Pieru dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Charles shoots for a double leg takedown but Pieru sprawls well. He's pushed Charles's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Charles misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Pieru doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Charles counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Charles wants to lay and pray for a moment but Pieru keeps working.
Charles moves nicely into side control.
Pieru manages to work his way to half guard, despite Charles's best efforts.
Pieru has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Charles is working away from the top position though.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pieru is not content to let Charles control the position.
Pieru manages to get to full guard.

Charles trying to control the position from guard on top but Pieru is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Pieru tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Charles looking to pass the guard.
Pieru has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Pieru wants to sweep here but Charles controlling him for the moment.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Pieru closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Charles tries to buck Pieru off but Pieru is having none of it.

Charles is looking to reverse the position.

Charles seems a little lost for a moment, as Pieru dominates the positioning.
Charles is looking to regain half guard here but Pieru keeps moving and retains side control.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Pieru fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Charles sprawls well initially but Pieru persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Pieru is looking to take a break and control but Charles is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Pieru is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Pieru is trying to control the action in half guard but Charles is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Pieru thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Charles is looking for a sweep. Pieru is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Pieru is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Charles defends it well.
Pieru tries to stand and escape but Charles is controlling the position.

Charles flailing away with punches but nothing is landing.
BOOM! Pieru connects with a massive shot to the dome!

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Pieru slips a nice elbow through Charles's hands, connecting with Charles's forehead.
Charles avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Pieru.
Pieru is thwarting Charles's attempts to control the position.
Charles slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Pieru distracts Charles with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Charles has his takedown stuffed

and Pieru counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Charles!
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ray Charles. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Pieru breaks from Charles's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Pieru trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Charles sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Yrjo Pieru showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Charles's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Pieru doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Charles counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Pieru will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

Charles drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Pieru dives on top into guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Charles tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Pieru wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Pieru looks up at the clock and then as Charles takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Pieru smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

Charles is working an open guard so Pieru takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Charles gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Charles working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Pieru doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Pieru manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Pieru is fighting to break Charles's control of his arms but Charles is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Charles had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Pieru is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Charles Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Pieru's back instead.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Pieru wants to stand up but Charles is controlling him.
Charles wants to control from the top but Pieru keeps moving.
Pieru manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Charles manages to get himself to full guard.
Charles has momentary wrist control but Pieru slips an elbow through the middle.

Charles lands with a couple of good shots - one to the side of the head and one questionable shot that could be viewed as to the back of the head but the referee lets it go.

Charles is looking for a triangle but Pieru pushes his legs off easily.

I would just about give that final round to Yrjo Pieru.
Well Pieru has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
