Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Helio Chavez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rick Purcell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chavez comes to the ring accompanied by The Brazilian National Anthem. Helio Chavez has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Rick Purcell!
The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, James Glass and James Atkins.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Chavez shoots in for a takedown but Purcell shows good takedown defense.
Chavez closes this distance looking for a takedown but Purcell circles away.
Chavez lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Chavez fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Helio Chavez. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Purcell bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Chavez takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Purcell lands a few punches from side control.
Purcell wants to stand but Chavez is controlling his arm.
Chavez gets back to half guard.
Chavez manages to get to full guard.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Chavez doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

Chavez is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Purcell tries to stand but Chavez is controlling from the bottom.

Chavez escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Purcell gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Purcell really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Chavez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Chavez is breathing heavily.
Purcell stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Chavez swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Purcell postures up in Chavez's guard and throws a big left but Chavez blocks it.

Chavez looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Purcell passes into side control.
Chavez is looking to reverse the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Purcell fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Chavez tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Purcell tries to stand but Chavez is controlling his head.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Purcell misses with the combination.
Purcell defending well as Chavez loads up on a big left hand.
Chavez closes this distance looking for a takedown but Purcell circles away.
The fight stays on the outside here - Purcell looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Chavez changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Purcell tries to avoid it but Chavez manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Purcell to the ground. Purcell escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Chavez throws an overhand right that lands on Purcell's shoulder, as Purcell tries to avoid the shot.

Chavez has his takedown stuffed

and Purcell decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Chavez's guard.

Chavez is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Purcell stands up from guard. Let's bang!

and Purcell connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.


It looks like Helio Chavez has been cut.

Purcell has closed the distance and engaged Chavez in a clinch.

Purcell swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Purcell lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Chavez at a distance.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Chavez takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Purcell looks for a takedown but Chavez sprawls well.
Chavez takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.

Purcell throws a series of punches but Chavez avoids them all with ease.
Rick Purcell seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Nice takedown defense from Purcell. No joy for Chavez on that attempt.

Oh Chavez is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!

Purcell connects with a good right hand that stumbles Chavez. Chavez circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Purcell looks to land a combination but Chavez avoids it well.

Chavez shoots in but Purcell avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Purcell avoids the body shot from Chavez.
Purcell tries to bum rush Chavez with a series of wild strikes but Chavez uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Chavez misses with a jab, cross combination.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Purcell throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Chavez shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Purcell but Purcell pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Purcell closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Purcell stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Helio Chavez is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Purcell tries to close the distance and clinch up against the ropes but Chavez paws at him with a jab and circles away.

and Purcell counters with a single leg into guard. Chavez didn't expect that.

Purcell decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Chavez misses with a takedown attempt
and Chavez takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Chavez shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Purcell pinned against the cage. Purcell gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Purcell doesn't manage to clinch there - Chavez circles away.
Purcell will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Chavez throws a jab when Purcell was well out of range.

Chavez drives through with a takedown into guard.
Chavez works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Purcell looks like he's trying to stand up.

Chavez is looking for a kimura but Purcell is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Chavez to get the leverage.
Chavez lands strikes from half guard.
Purcell wants to get back to his feet.
Chavez lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Chavez throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Purcell tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Chavez has advanced to mount. Uh oh.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Purcell can do anything to dispel that myth.

Chavez with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Chavez has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Purcell squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.

Purcell is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the ropes but Chavez has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Chavez has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Purcell is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Chavez yanks on the arm and Purcell is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Chavez.
