PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mario Toro (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Aaron Cross (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mario Toro!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Aaron Cross!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Jeff Smith and Ryoma Takatsuka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Excellent takedown into side control there by Cross.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Toro is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Cross off and has taken his back!
Cross tries to escape but Toro has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
Cross just trying to survive but Toro is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.
Toro has the hooks in. Cross is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cross trying to control the hands but Toro breaks the grip.
So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Aaron Cross hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Cross moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.

Toro drives through and clinches with Cross against the cage.
Toro wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Cross has him pressed against the cage.

Cross has Toro pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Cross pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Toro tumbling to the mat - Cross dives into Toro's guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Cross might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Toro haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Toro wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Cross is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Aaron Cross has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Toro drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Cross is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Toro wants to stand but Cross is controlling his posture from full guard.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Cross bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Toro fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Cross fails with a takedown attempt.
Toro throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Toro moves into the clinch successfully.
Cross keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Toro's efforts to push away.
Toro doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Toro tries to circle away but Cross has him pinned against the cage.
Toro goes for a body shot but it's blocked.

Cross is trying to trip Toro. He has hold of a leg but Toro is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Cross persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Toro controls Cross momentarily but Cross frees himself.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mario Toro dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!



Cross moves into the clinch.
Toro wants to break free but Cross has control.

Cross breaks the clinch.
Cross tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Toro defends well and Cross ends up having to push Toro into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Toro gets underhooks to prevent Cross's takedown attempt.

Toro rushes Cross and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.

Toro jumps guard and drags Cross to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Toro will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Cross is fighting to break Toro's control of his arms but Toro is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Mario Toro wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Cross moves into the clinch.
Cross is trying to drag Toro to the mat but Toro just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Mario Toro has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Aaron Cross.
Toro is looking to break free of the clinch but Cross has double underhooks.

Cross won't allow Toro to sweep him here.

Cross must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Toro closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Toro lands in his opponent's guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Cross can do anything to dispel that myth.
Cross is trying to hold Toro in close to prevent damage but Toro has managed to pass into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Toro prevents Cross from improving his position.

Toro decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
Cross should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Cross dives in and grabs Toro's left leg, looking for a takedown. Toro pushes down on Cross's head and hops out.
Cross fails with the takedown.

Cross closes the distance and pushes Toro back into the cage.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Cross slows down the pace here.
Toro wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Toro stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Toro wants it to stay on the feet.
Cross looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Toro slips a jab and a cross from Cross.
Cross dives in for a single leg takedown but Toro sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Cross is trying to trip Toro. He has hold of a leg but Toro is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Cross persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Toro wants to sweep but no luck.
Toro controlling the position.
Cross prevents Toro from getting back to his feet.
Toro looking to hit a scissor sweep but Cross is one step ahead there.

We're going to have a standup here because Mario Toro wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Cross fails with the takedown.
Mario Toro has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Aaron Cross.

Toro darts in and clinches Cross up against the cage.

The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Toro dodges an elbow strike from Cross.

Cross breaks the clinch.
Cross misses with a head kick.
Toro connects with a looping right hand.

Toro manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Cross on his heels. He'll look to pass Cross's guard now, I'm sure.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Toro wants to control from the top but Cross keeps moving.

Toro slaps away a takedown attempt from Cross, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Aaron Cross is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Toro jabs at Cross's body.
Cross takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Toro lands a jab to Cross's midsection.
Cross drops his hands momentarily. Toro doesn't need a second invitation, landing a shot to the temple. Cross staggers and falls to the mat and the ref dives in to save him from any more punishment. Cross doesn't seem happy with the stoppage but he was done.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:11 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Mario Toro!
