The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Akesson lands a big head kick that sends Santos tumbling to the mat! Akesson takes a step backwards and waves Santos back to his feet - he wants the finish!

It looks like Neil Santos has been cut.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Santos shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Akesson as he jumps to the side.
Santos has been working on his balance at MuscleWorks Amsterdam™ , so perhaps that has help him stuff some of the takedown attempts by Akesson.
Akesson avoids the head kick by Santos.
Santos is breathing heavily.
Santos swings for the body but Akesson moves out of range.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Akesson.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Santos is not content to let Akesson control the position.
Santos seems a little lost for a moment, as Akesson dominates the positioning.

Santos stops Akesson from passing to mount.
Akesson has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Akesson wants to lay and pray for a moment but Santos keeps working.
Akesson remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Akesson remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Akesson gets his hooks in and is throwing strikes.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Akesson tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Santos has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Akesson is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Santos.
Akesson connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Santos some visible discomfort.

Akesson is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Santos is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Santos is working to avoid the ground and pound but Akesson connects with a decent elbow.
Santos is letting Akesson control him for a moment.
Santos tries to improve position but can't.

Akesson wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Santos, who protects the arm well.

Akesson decides to stand back up. Akesson steps back and let's Santos get back to his feet.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Akesson steps into range and unloads a brutal right left combo! Santos is out on his feet! Akesson sets himself and nearly takes Santos's head off with a straight right, sending him crashing to the mat! Wow, that was nasty... but awesome! Wooo!
