The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Skinner connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Mendez momentarily.

It looks like Jim Mendez has been cut.

Skinner drops Mendez with a hook right on the temple. He thinks about going to the ground but Mendez looks back up at him and smiles so Skinner waves him back to his feet - he obviously thinks he can knock him out after that shot landed.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Skinner works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.

Mendez is rocked!

Mendez scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Oh Mendez is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Skinner wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
Skinner really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Mendez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Mendez has hold of Skinner's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Skinner tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Mendez cranks the arm and Skinner screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Skinner, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.
