PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Rubin Carter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Lakanik (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). John Lakanik told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Rubin Carter!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 12 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Lakanik!
The judges for this bout are Steve Montenegro, Joseph Jones and Lou da Vinci.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carter chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Lakanik can pounce on him.
Lakanik throws a good cross that connects.

Lakanik rushes Carter and presses him up against the cage.
Lakanik changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Carter fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Lakanik misses with a head kick.

Carter closes the distance and pushes Lakanik back into the cage.
Lakanik prevents the takedown attempt.

Lakanik pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Lakanik misses with a body kick.
Lakanik cracks the inside of Carter's front leg.

Lakanik has Carter up against the cage in a clinch.
Lakanik prevents a takedown attempt there.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Lakanik is trying to break the clinch but Carter is controlling him.

Lakanik breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
We've been hearing reports that Carter has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Carter avoids the head kick by Lakanik.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Lakanik throws a leg kick but Carter moved away.
Carter shoots for a double leg takedown but Lakanik sprawls well. He's pushed Carter's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Rubin Carter. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Carter closes the distance but Lakanik moves to the side
letting Lakanik counter with a right hand.
Lakanik throws a head kick but Carter moves out of range.
Lakanik swats away the attempt to clinch by Carter.
Good leg kick by Lakanik there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Carter walks forward, straight into a front kick from Lakanik.
Carter on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Lakanik. Lakanik obviously looking to wear him down.
Lakanik lands with a thumping leg kick.
Lakanik throws a low kick but Carter avoids it.
Carter shoots in looking for a takedown but Lakanik manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Carter's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Carter tries to clinch up but Lakanik circles away and keeps his distance.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Lakanik has taken the fight to the clinch.
Carter misses with some punches.
Carter fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Carter changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Lakanik fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Carter tries to keep at a distance but Lakanik has taken the fight into the clinch.

Lakanik pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Lakanik throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Carter's head.
John Lakanik seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Lakanik gets tackled into the cage by Carter. Carter maintains the clinch.

Lakanik manages to break the clinch.

Lakanik has Carter up against the cage in a clinch.
Still in the clinch, Carter scores with a nice short uppercut.
Lakanik tries to break free but Carter pushes him back against the cage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Lakanik pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
The fighters circle, before Lakanik throws a beautiful high kick that crashes into Carter's neck, sending him stumbling to the floor! Lakanik lands more strikes and forces a referee stoppage! That one ended in an instant!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:10 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Kick & Punches). John Lakanik!
In his post fight interview, John Lakanik started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
