Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jesse James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Karl Anderssen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). James kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genuis that is Ballad of Jesse James. Karl Anderssen struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 156.2lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Karl Anderssen!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Edson Gomes and Luis Engracia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
James misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Karl Anderssen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
James circles away from the clinch attempt.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Anderssen tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Anderssen is looking to clinch but James is avoiding it.
James shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Anderssen as he jumps to the side.
James wants to clinch but Anderssen slips to the side

and Anderssen holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Anderssen escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Anderssen finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.

and James counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by James.

James tries to free his leg and advance position but Anderssen is retaining full guard.
Anderssen is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Anderssen manages to escape and get back to his feet.

and James decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Anderssen's guard.

James tries to free his leg and advance position but Anderssen is retaining full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

James thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
James loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

so Anderssen counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
James seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
James looking for a sweep. Not yet James, not yet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
James is working hard here to advance position.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Jesse James just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
James is looking to control Anderssen's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can James avoid being mounted?
James is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
James manages to get to full guard.

Anderssen avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

James is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

James has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Anderssen can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
James pulls Anderssen in to control the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
James lands a decent shot there.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now James is on top in guard.
James passes easily into side control. Nice work.

James stands up and beckons Anderssen to his feet.
James wants to clinch but Anderssen slips to the side

and Anderssen holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
James stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.
James tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Anderssen smiles and moves away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Karl Anderssen will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Anderssen keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
James wants to clinch.
James tries to close the distance and clinch up but Anderssen swats him away and circles back towards the center.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
James fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

James avoiding damage as Anderssen throws knees to the body.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Anderssen misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from James.

Anderssen escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
James tries to close the distance and clinch but Anderssen swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

James darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Anderssen takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
James thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Anderssen's head.

James wants to control but Anderssen is keeping him busy.
James looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
James trying to control from half guard but Anderssen is working away.

James is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with James in particular looking to stall.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Anderssen keeps the fight on the outside.
James tries for a takedown but Anderssen sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

James shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Anderssen's guard.
James wants to pass the guard but Anderssen is keeping the position.
James is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
