The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smooth throws a nice looking combination but Townsend bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Smooth fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Townsend sprawls well initially but Smooth persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smooth stalling.
Smooth frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Smooth stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.
Smooth tries to clinch there but Townsend circles away.

and Townsend decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Smooth's guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Smooth feints and as Townsend raises his hands in defense, Smooth changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Smooth throws a low kick but Townsend avoids it.

and Townsend counters with a shoot takedown. Smooth fights it but they end up in guard.
Townsend will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Smooth tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Smooth has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Townsend really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
