PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Gabriel Cruz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Phreak Nakkan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cruz's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, CALIFORNIA LOVE by Tupac ft. Dr. Dre. Nakkan has chosen Voodoo as his entrance music. Buckle up people - heeeeeeeeeere we go!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Gabriel Cruz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Phreak Nakkan!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Don Winkell and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cruz lands a lovely overhand right.
Nakkan closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Nakkan looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
The fighters circling - Cruz throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

Nakkan drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Cruz is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Nakkan is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Nakkan stands up.
Cruz connects with a looping right hand.
Nakkan uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Cruz.
Nakkan's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Cruz connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Nakkan scrambles back to his feet.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Cruz's corner calls for a 1-2. Cruz obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.

Gabriel Cruz seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Cruz misses with a series of wild punches.

Nakkan shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Cruz napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Cruz is not content to let Nakkan control the position.

Nakkan tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Nakkan trying to control the action but Cruz is working from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Cruz tries to bench press Nakkan off him but Nakkan keeps the position.
Nakkan lands a few punches from side control.
A lull in the action here as Nakkan stalls from top position.
Cruz is looking for a sweep.

Cruz is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Nakkan is one step ahead and moves to full mount!
Nakkan sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Cruz is trying to reverse the position but instead Nakkan has taken his back - oops!

Nakkan is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.
Nakkan keeps control of the position as Cruz tries to break free.

Nakkan not allowing Cruz to control his hands.
Cruz tries to roll but Nakkan sticks to his back.
Cruz trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.
We've been hearing good reports from Cruz's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
Cruz is trying to break free.
Nakkan is not going to allow Cruz to sit and survive in this position.
Nakkan is throwing punches to the body, looking to soften Cruz up.
Cruz is defending well here and trying to improve his position.
Cruz is trying to remain composed but Nakkan is hammering down strikes to the side of his head.

Cruz is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Nakkan gets his way!
Nakkan controlling well, preventing Cruz from escaping the position.

Cruz turns into Nakkan and is now in his guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Cruz trying to control the position from guard on top but Nakkan is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Cruz works a leg free and moves into half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Cruz is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.
Nakkan avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Phreak Nakkan will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Nakkan darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Cruz is pressing down on Nakkan's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Cruz looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Nakkan slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Cruz looking for a sweep. Not yet Cruz, not yet.
Nakkan wants to pass the guard but Cruz is keeping the position.
Nakkan seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Phreak Nakkan was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Nakkan looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Cruz throws a shot to the body.
Cruz is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.
Nakkan takes a shot right to the bread basket.

Nakkan clinches up against the cage.

Nakkan jumps into guard, dragging Cruz to the mat.
Nakkan pulls Cruz in to control the position.

Cruz has gone for a leg lock! Nakkan slips out almost immediately though and dives into Cruz's guard.

Cruz looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Nakkan forces his way into half guard.
Nakkan content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Nakkan throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Cruz looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Cruz is looking to improve his position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Cruz is looking to control Nakkan's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Cruz avoid being mounted?

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Nakkan is keen to just control but Cruz is a slippery customer.
Cruz gets back to full guard.

Cruz looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Nakkan is defending well. Cruz quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Nakkan has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Cruz celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:49 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Gabriel Cruz!
Gabriel Cruz very nearly forgot to thank KAISER amongst all the excitement of his win but just as the interview came to a close, he screamed their name. Hopefully he'll get a few nice freebies in the mail as a thank you.
