PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Brazilian Element I (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Takanori Gomi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Brazilian Element I!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Takanori Gomi!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Winston Howard and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Element I changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Gomi tries to avoid it but Element I manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Gomi to the ground. Gomi escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Element I attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Element I drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Element I shoots in looking for a takedown. Gomi tries to sprawl out of it but Element I keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Gomi manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Gomi shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Element I napping and manages to drive through into side control!
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Gomi thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Gomi tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Element I is trying to control Gomi's posture but Gomi avoids it.
Element I might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Element I isn't going anywhere.
Element I is trying to get back to half guard.
Element I is trying to control Gomi's posture but Gomi avoids it.

Gomi is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Element I has escaped the position, nice work there.
Element I tries to buck Gomi off but Gomi is having none of it.
Gomi lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Element I down.

Element I is working to avoid the ground and pound but Gomi connects with a decent elbow.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Element I is rocked!

Gomi tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Gomi has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Oh Element I is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!

Gomi wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Element I, who protects the arm well.

Element I can't do much from the bottom here.
Element I is looking to regain half guard here but Gomi keeps moving and retains side control.

Gomi working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Gomi has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Gomi wants to control but Element I is keeping him busy.
Gomi lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.

Element I is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Element I shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Gomi defends it nicely.
Element I gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Gomi counters with a straight right hand.
Brazilian Element I seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gomi stalks Element I and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Element I's face. Element I staggers backwards, shaken.

Element I throws a sloppy head kick and Gomi moves out of range easily.
Gomi works Element I's body with a nice hook.
Gomi's corner calls for a 1-2. Gomi obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Element I drops his hands momentarily and Gomi takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Element I will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brazilian Element I. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Gomi swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Element I.
Element I looks for a takedown but Gomi sprawls well.

Gomi is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
Element I fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Gomi is out of range.
Element I fails with the takedown
and Gomi counters with a three punch combo that has Element I backing up. Element I nods at Gomi to acknowledge the strikes.
Element I takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Gomi has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
Element I throws a predictable looking body shot
and Gomi cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Element I takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.

Element I throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Gomi tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Element I is in Gomi's guard.
Takanori Gomi has got the better of the ground game so far.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Gomi thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Gomi escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Element I gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Element I stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gomi swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Gomi is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Element I is aware though and is defending well.
Element I postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Element I is really struggling to control Gomi but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Element I wants to pass the guard but Gomi is keeping the position.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Element I is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Brazilian Element I just wasn't active enough.
Gomi lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Takanori Gomi showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. And we move into the final round!


Gomi is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.

Element I takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Gomi uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Element I has time to react.

Element I shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Gomi but Gomi pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Element I throws a big shot that misses.
Gomi throws a good cross that connects.
Gomi might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.
Gomi keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Element I looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that.

Element I shoots in for a takedown but Gomi shows good takedown defense.
Takanori Gomi seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Element I walks into a stiff left hand from Gomi.
Gomi gets in close and tags Element I with a short punch that almost sends Element I to the mat! Oh Element I is in big trouble! He turns his back on Gomi, trying to create some distance but Gomi rushes him, striking wildly and Element I goes down! The referee tackles Gomi into the cage to end the fight! Gomi is one violent man!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:53 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Takanori Gomi!
Takanori Gomi decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.
