PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Paul McKilly (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gustavo Meranda (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Meranda is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Whats Beef. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Paul McKilly!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Gustavo Meranda!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Jack Bonds and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Meranda gets tackled into the cage by McKilly. McKilly maintains the clinch.

McKilly is fighting off a takedown attempt but Meranda is just too persistent for him and manages to trip McKilly to the mat. McKilly regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Meranda slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Meranda wants to control but McKilly is keeping him busy.
McKilly on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if McKilly tries to get out of the position.

Meranda looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Meranda thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Meranda in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Meranda throwing strikes but missing, from side control.
This has been an exciting period of action!
McKilly tries to escape but Meranda is in control.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Meranda is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but McKilly is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Meranda tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Meranda thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
McKilly tries to escape but Meranda is in control.
The strikes coming from Meranda are missing the target in this wave of attacks.

Meranda is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, McKilly has escaped the position, nice work there.
Meranda wants to lay and pray for a moment but McKilly keeps working.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
McKilly is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
McKilly knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Meranda on the ground.

Meranda tries for a kimura but McKilly is defending well.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Meranda trying to control the position but McKilly is working away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
McKilly is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Meranda thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Meranda wants to control but McKilly is keeping him busy.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Meranda advances nicely into full mount.
Meranda takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
McKilly's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.

Meranda jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but McKilly manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Meranda tries to advance to mount but can't.
McKilly is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Meranda has just dragged him back down to the mat.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Meranda lands a few punches from side control.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gustavo Meranda dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Meranda drives through and clinches with McKilly against the cage.
Meranda blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
McKilly tries to stall but Meranda uses the opportunity to gain a better position.

Meranda manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Meranda looking for a guillotine here but McKilly defends easily.

McKilly is trying to tuck his arms in to keep them safe but Meranda has managed to isolate one of them and has got a loose triangle. McKilly is looking to defend but Meranda has done well to lock his legs together - this could be big trouble for McKilly! Meranda pulls down on the head and a little smile comes across his face - he knows he's got it. Yep, McKilly taps out and this one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Gustavo Meranda!
