PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Ash Oneill (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Anthony Pettis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ash Oneill!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Anthony Pettis!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Hugh Johnson and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pettis shoots and misses

and Oneill moves into the clinch.
Oneill tries for a takedown. No joy.
Pettis fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Oneill is trying to break the clinch but Pettis has him pressed against the cage.
Pettis misses with a knee strike.
Pettis looking to stall.
Oneill wants to break free but Pettis has control.
Pettis has Oneill pressed against the cage.
Pettis jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Oneill walks away with a smile on his face. Pettis gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Ash Oneill has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Anthony Pettis.
Oneill tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Pettis manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Oneill feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Pettis controls Oneill momentarily but Oneill frees himself.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Oneill wants to pass the guard but Pettis is keeping the position.
Oneill passes Pettis's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Pettis wants to get back to his feet.
Oneill stalling.
Oneill could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Oneill's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

We're going to have a standup here because Ash Oneill wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Oneill wants to clinch up but Pettis keeps it at a distance.
Danga de danga de dang - Pettis scores with a four punch combination!
Pettis fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Pettis tries to clinch up but Oneill circles away and keeps his distance.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Pettis tries to clinch up.
Pettis moves in looking to clinch but Oneill pushes him off.

Oneill closes the distance and clinches.
Pettis doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Oneill works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.
Oneill leaning against his opponent.

Pettis jumps guard.
Oneill is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Oneill might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Pettis controls Oneill momentarily but Oneill frees himself.
Oneill throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Pettis works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Pettis working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Oneill.
Oneill is looking to work some ground and pound but Pettis has wrist control.
Pettis not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Oneill is looking to advance position but Pettis has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Pettis is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Oneill can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Oneill tries to hold on but Pettis pushes him away.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Oneill holds on, trying desperately to control.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Pettis tries to control but Oneill wriggling away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ash Oneill dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Oneill.
Pettis tries for a takedown but Oneill sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Oneill looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Pettis throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Oneill shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Pettis pinned against the cage. Pettis gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ash Oneill. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Oneill darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Pettis takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Oneill tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Pettis tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Oneill swivels and escapes.

Pettis closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Pettis in side control, throwing shots but Oneill defends.
Pettis tries to stand but Oneill is controlling his head.

Oneill explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!
Oneill looks for a takedown but Pettis sprawls well.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Oneill tries for a takedown but Pettis sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Oneill tries to close the distance and clinch but Pettis swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Oneill manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Pettis on his heels. He'll look to pass Pettis's guard now, I'm sure.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Pettis striking off his back but it's not causing Oneill any problems.
Pettis is trying to control the position but Oneill postures up.
Oneill would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Pettis wants to sweep here but Oneill controlling him for the moment.

Pettis pushes a forearm under Oneill's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Oneill is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:51 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Anthony Pettis!
After winning the bout, Anthony Pettis thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
