PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Fono Pono (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Knock Out (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Fono Pono!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Knock Out!
The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, Hugh Johnson and Bruno Hogan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Out gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Pono to score an easy takedown into full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pono not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Out is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Pono pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Out is keeping the position for now.
Pono is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Pono has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Fono Pono just wasn't active enough.

Pono gets a takedown into half guard.

Out is trying to control but can't.
It looks like Pono is going to stand back up.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Pono in particular looking to stall.
Out trying to hold on to Pono's head to control him but Pono postures up.
Pono wants to pass the guard but Out is defending well.

Pono is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Out sees it coming and defends easily.

Out works his way to full guard. Good work.

Out has his foot on Pono's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Pono works his way back into a safe position though.
Pono has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Out looking for a sweep. Not yet Out, not yet.
Pono really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Out is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Pono is aware though and is defending well.

Pono drops back, looking for a kneebar! Out looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Out looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Out!
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Pono parries the strikes from Out easily there. Out is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Pono to escape.
Out trying to control the position but Pono is working away.
Pono tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Out wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pono has one of Out's arms on lockdown, trying to prevent him from doing any damage.
Out wants to control but Pono is keeping him busy.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Out sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Pono is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Pono is not content to let Out control the position.
Pono is looking to regain half guard here but Out keeps moving and retains side control.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Fono Pono will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Out misses with a telegraphed body shot

and Pono counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Out manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Pono wants to hold on but Out pushes him away.
Out trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Pono tries to control the position but Out now has his back.
Out keeps control of the position as Pono tries to break free.
Out trying desperately to keep hold of the dominant position.

Out is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Pono is defending well though. Out let's go of the attempt for now.

Pono just trying to survive but Out is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.
Out trying to control momentarily.
Pono is in bad spot here.
Pono holding both Out 's hands and preventing any damage.
Well, with Out on his back, surely it's only a matter of time before Pono is tapping out... Can he escape the position?

Out working for a choke but Pono reverses nicely into Out 's guard.

Pono sitting in guard here, content to control.

Out working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Pono doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Pono manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Out trying to keep a closed guard but Pono is proving a slippery customer.
Pono knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Out on the ground.
Out wants to stand up but Pono is controlling him.
Out looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Pono is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Pono stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Out swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Pono will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Fono Pono.
Out takes a swing at Pono's ribcage but misses.
Pono swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Pono looks to land a combination but Out avoids it well.

Pono fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Out to the ground. Pono is now in Out's guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Pono working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Out working a defensive guard here.
Pono trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Out looking to control.
Out keeping full guard, as Pono tries to pass.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Out is trying to keep Pono in close.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

and Pono counters with a three punch combo that has Out backing up. Out nods at Pono to acknowledge the strikes.

Pono closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Out quickly recovers to half guard.

Pono is trying to work for a kimura but Out is defending well.
Pono wants to stand but Out has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Pono trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.

Pono seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

The fighters are battling for position here. Out manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Out is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Out had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Pono defends it easily.
Out looking to hit a scissor sweep but Pono is one step ahead there.

Fono Pono overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Pono wants to control from the top but Out keeps moving.

Out is working an open guard so Pono takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
A head kick by Out misses
and Pono counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.

Fono Pono showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Pono has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
