PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Aderbal Maia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Johan Boshoff (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Aderbal Maia!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Johan Boshoff!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Alexandre Firmino and Luis Engracia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
No luck with that takedown attempt from Boshoff.
Boshoff has his takedown stuffed

and Maia counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Boshoff's guard now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Boshoff is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Maia drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Boshoff dives on top into guard.

Maia has his foot on Boshoff's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Boshoff works his way back into a safe position though.
Maia seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Maia keeping moving, preventing Boshoff from controlling successfully.
Maia looking to hit a scissor sweep but Boshoff is one step ahead there.

Maia is looking for a triangle but Boshoff pushes his legs off easily.

Maia is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Boshoff is aware though and is defending well.

Boshoff is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Boshoff throwing strikes from guard but Maia blocks nicely.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

Maia is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Boshoff defends well.
Maia wants to hit a switch here but Boshoff passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Maia there!
Maia can't escape the position.
Maia stops Boshoff from taking his back. Still, being mounted isn't any better.
Maia is working to get back to half guard.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Maia on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Boshoff is looking to take a break and control but Maia is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Maia wants to improve his position but Boshoff is controlling well.
Maia works his way to full guard. Good work.
Boshoff trying to control but Maia is working from the bottom.

Maia escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Boshoff gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Boshoff must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Maia lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Boshoff!

Boshoff has left one of his arms exposed and Maia doesn't need a second invitation. He's isolated it and locked on a tight armbar. Boshoff screams and taps out, obviously in a lot of pain. Hopefully there isn't permanent damage to that arm.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:48 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Aderbal Maia!
Aderbal Maia decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
Johan Boshoff was interviewed post fight and said 'You win some, you lose some.'.
