PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Efren Baird (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jose Aldo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Aldo has chosen Lupang Hinirang-Philippines National Anthem as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Efren Baird!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Jose Aldo!
The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, Sam Margolis and James Ackerman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Aldo stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Aldo wants it to stay on the feet.
Baird closes the distance and clinches up with Aldo, looking for a takedown. Baird pushes Aldo against the cage but Aldo circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Baird misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
A nice inside leg kick there by Aldo. That's going to slow Baird down.
Aldo is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Baird drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Aldo has a couple of punches blocked by Baird.

Baird shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Aldo but Aldo pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Aldo lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Aldo.


It looks like Efren Baird has been cut.

Baird dodges the punch combination from Aldo.
Aldo throws a series of punches but Baird avoids them all with ease.
Aldo tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Baird manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Baird looks for the body kick but Aldo saw that one coming.
Baird fails to land the takedown.

Baird takes the fight into the clinch.
Aldo wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Aldo is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Baird manages to pull guard.

Baird has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Aldo can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Aldo throws a strike but Baird rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Aldo wants to sweep here but Baird controlling him for the moment.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Baird in particular looking to stall.

Baird thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Aldo's head.
Baird content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Aldo is trying to maintain the position but Baird is very close to passing his half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.

Baird moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.

and Baird counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Aldo is lucky that one didn't land flush.

Aldo cracks the inside of Baird's front leg.
Aldo will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Baird shoots in but Aldo avoids the takedown attempt easily.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Aldo throws a sloppy head kick and Baird moves out of range easily.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Aldo crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Baird - the referee stops the clock and Aldo gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Baird. Aldo manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Aldo creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Baird's defenses.

Aldo manages to break the clinch.
Baird has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Aldo finds it's way round the side to connect with Baird's head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jose Aldo showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!



Aldo instigates a clinch.

Baird jumps guard and drags Aldo to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Baird is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Aldo defends well.
Aldo wants to control from the top but Baird keeps moving.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Aldo must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Baird lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Aldo!

Aldo is trying to reverse the position but instead Baird has taken his back - oops!
What can Aldo do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!
Aldo really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Baird. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Aldo is defending well here and trying to improve his position.

What can Aldo do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Baird looking to break Aldo's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Aldo remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Baird will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!
Jose Aldo is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Efren Baird.
I think Aldo has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
