PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Leo Shepard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sean Doyle (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Doyle is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by X Gon Give It To Ya. Leo Shepard has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Leo Shepard!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Sean Doyle!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Timothy Bukovac and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fight stays on the outside here - Doyle looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Doyle decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Shepard avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Doyle.
Shepard is refusing to be controlled, as Doyle sits in half guard.

Shepard manages to escape and get back to his feet!

Doyle shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Doyle decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.

Doyle looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Shepard is staying active underneath Doyle, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Shepard preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.

Shepard trying to hold on to Doyle's head to control him but Doyle postures up.
Shepard really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

We're going to have a standup here because Leo Shepard wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Shepard keeps the fight on the outside.
Doyle tries to close the distance and clinch but Shepard swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Doyle is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Doyle looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Doyle must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Shepard scrambles and gets back to his feet.

Doyle closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Doyle wants to stand but Shepard has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Doyle is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Shepard has managed to free his arm - good work.
Doyle looks winded!
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Doyle lands a nice short elbow.
Shepard wants to get back to full guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Shepard moves into full guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Shepard had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Doyle defends it easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sean Doyle dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Doyle drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Doyle decides to stand back up.

Doyle closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Shepard did well to prevent Doyle getting side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Shepard tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Doyle perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Shepard manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Doyle keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.
Shepard misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Doyle.
Doyle looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Shepard tries to throw a body punch but Doyle avoids it by throwing Shepard back against the cage.

With the fighters up against the cage, Shepard throws an elbow but misses.
Doyle working hard to break the clinch.
Shepard tries to break free but Doyle pushes him back against the cage.

Doyle jumps guard.
Shepard stands up over Doyle, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Shepard working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Doyle's head.
Doyle is breathing heavily.
Shepard is looking to work some ground and pound but Doyle has wrist control.
Doyle throwing strikes off his back to little effect.

Doyle is looking to stand up but Shepard isn't so interested in that idea.
Shepard content to stall in guard here.

Shepard drops back looking for a leg! Doyle is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Doyle manages to kick Shepard off! Shepard jumps back into Doyle's guard.

Shepard will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Shepard lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Shepard postures up and lands a big shot to Doyle's brow.
Shepard distracts Doyle with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Shepard in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Shepard keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Doyle's head.
Sean Doyle has got the better of the ground game so far.
Shepard trying to control the position from guard on top but Doyle is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Shepard stops Doyle from standing up.
Shepard throwing strikes from guard but Doyle blocks nicely.
Shepard is working Doyle over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Shepard stands up and waves to Doyle to follow him.

Doyle misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Doyle tries to clinch but Shepard moves away
and Shepard counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.

Shepard looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Doyle is fending him off so far but Shepard persists. Nope, Doyle circles away and we're back to standing.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
The fight stays on the outside here - Doyle looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
No luck for Shepard with that takedown attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Leo Shepard will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Doyle fails in his attempt to clinch.
Sean Doyle seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Doyle shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Shepard napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Doyle stands up and beckons Shepard to his feet.
Shepard swats away the attempt to clinch by Doyle.

Doyle feints and as Shepard raises his hands in defense, Doyle changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Doyle takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Doyle drops back, looking for a kneebar! Shepard looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Shepard looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Shepard!

Shepard tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Shepard has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Doyle tries to control the position but he's not in luck - Shepard easily slips into full mount!
Shepard lands a big elbow.
Shepard has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Doyle is in all sorts of trouble here.

Shepard is working for a guillotine from mount but Doyle frees his head quite easily.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Shepard postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Doyle looks a forlorn figure.
Shepard tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Shepard cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Shepard lands a big elbow.
Doyle is desperately trying to improve his position but Shepard has a good base and remains in mount.
Shepard is landing with some decent strikes but Doyle is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Doyle tries to lock up and control but Shepard gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Shepard takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Doyle is wriggling around trying to escape.

And that's the end of the fight!
Leo Shepard showed his dominance in that final round.
